About Our Practice

The Summit Spine Institute was founded at Emanuel Hospital in 2007 by J. Rafe Sales, MD, a board-certified and fellowship-trained Orthopedic Spine Surgeon. The Institute was founded with the goal of becoming the premier institute for spinal care in the Northwest. Our mission is and has always been to provide patients with the best opportunity to return to their prior function, be it through nonoperative or operative care. Whether your pain arises from a small disc herniation or a debilitating spinal fracture, our first goal is always to provide a non-operative solution to a given problem. In some cases, however, nonoperative treatment fails or does not adequately address the issue, and in these cases we offer less invasive surgical options to get you back on your feet.

We recently moved our clinical headquarters to St. Vincent Hospital in West Portland and joined Dan Rohrer, MD and his associates at Comprehensive Neurological Consultants, PC. This unique arrangement of an Orthopedic Spine Surgeon collaborating closely with a Neurosurgeon allows the management of difficult and complex spinal pathology. We manage all aspects of spine care, from non-operative pain management and spinal decompressions to complex revision surgeries and spinal tumors. Aside from Dr. Sales and Dr. Rohrer, other providers in the group include Sean Brown, PA-C, and Don Mulconrey, PA-C.

Our specialty is providing minimally invasive solutions for complex spinal problems, and we offer the latest in spinal technology, including cervical and lumbar disc replacement. We are one of the few providers in the Portland area to offer spinal cord stimulator paddle placement and revisions when appropriate. Dr. Sales continues to function as the Director of Spinal Trauma at Legacy Emanuel Hospital as well, one of only three Level One Trauma Centers in the Northwest.

We at Summit Spine are committed to patient satisfaction. We look forward to having the opportunity to work with you, and to helping you achieve your best possible musculoskeletal health.
