About Our Practice

Dr. O'Brien is board certified in Orthopaedic Surgery by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery since 1996 and board ceritified in Spine Surgery by the American Board of Spine Surgery since 1999. He completed his orthopaedic surgery residency in 1994 at the Catholic Medical Center of Brooklyn and Queens (a Cornell Medical School affiliate) and his spine surgery training in 1995 at the Graduate Hospital in Philadelphia. He was recently recertified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery in 2006 and by the American Board of Spine Surgery in 2010.

Dr. O'Brien treats all types of spinal conditions of the neck and back including, disc herniation, radiculopathy or radiculitis with radiating arm pain or radiating leg pain -- sciatica, degenerative disc disease, low back pain, stenosis, spondylolisthesis, spondylolysis and pars interarticularis defects, myelopathy, neurogenic claudication, instability, deformity, scoliosis, tumors, vertebral compression or burst fractures from trauma or osteoporosis and lumbar sprain and strain injuries and cervical sprain and strain injuries.

He performs pain management injections, minimally invasive surgeries, and major spinal surgeries.Specifically, he performs diagnositic and therapeutic epidural injections, transforaminal injections, facet joint nerve injections, radiofrequency lesioning -- facet rhizotomy, discography, selective nerve root blocks, sacroiliac joint injections, and pars interarticularis injections.

Dr. O'Brien performs the following minimally invasive surgeries on an outpatient basis, microdiscectomy, percutaneous lumbar discectomy, cement vertebroplasty, Kyphoplasty, and percutaneous lumbar fusion.

The major open spinal surgeries include anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, vertebral corpectomy and fusion, cervical and lumbar laminectomy, posterior spinal fusion, anterior interbody fusion, posterior interbody fusion. The anterior lumbar fusion surgeries are performed with a board-certified vascular surgeon who protects the vascular structures during the surgery.

Dr. O'Brien is also trained in general orthopaedic surgery and provides a wide range of services and expert referrals for orthoaedic problems. Patients are evaluated by Dr. O'Brien and options of care are discussed based on presenting symptoms and medical diagnosis. He and his staff will take the time to answer all of your questions.
