About Our Practice

In the Neurosurgical Spine Program at Mount Sinai, we treat a broad range of spinal disorders in collaboration with specialists from Pain Management/Anesthesiology, Neurology, Rehabilitation Medicine, and other medical services. Wherever possible, we try to help people get better without surgery. Where appropriate, a broad range of surgical procedures are offered with a special focus on minimally-invasive surgical procedures. Conditions we treat include: craniovertebral junction disorders (Chiari malformation, occipital-cervical instability); cervical spine disorders (neck/arm pain, herniated disc, spinal stenosis, spondylosis, cervical myelopathy); thoracic spine disorders (herniated discs, tumors, paraspinal biopsies, thoracic myelopathy); lumbosacral spine disorders (low back/leg pain, herniated discs, spinal stenosis); spinal trauma (spinal cord injury, fractures); spinal tumors (intramedullary, intradural, extradural, paraspinal, nerve sheath tumors including neurofibroma and schwannoma); spinal deformity (scoliosis, spondylolisthesis, spinal instability, post-op kyphosis repair); congenital spine disease (diastematomyelia, dermal sinus, myelomeningocele); spinal vascular malformations; peripheral nerve surgery (carpal tunnel, ulnar nerve, meralgia paresthetica, tumors). In addition we have a growing research program interested in: spinal cord injury (acute and delayed intervention including restorative surgical strategies); surgical advances for minimally-invasive spine procedures; advanced uses of intraoperative imaging and image-guided spine surgery; outcomes research for spine disorders and spine surgery; spinal biomechanics and instrumentation; and the biology of spinal fusion and use of novel strategies to improve fusion success.
