About Our Practice

Luc Jasmin, MD, PhD is a neurosurgeon at the Los Angeles Neurosurgical Institute and a senior research scientist with the Board of Governors Gene Therapeutics Research Institute at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. In addition to his clinical responsibilities, Dr. Jasmin conducts research on the anatomical, cellular and molecular mechanisms of pain, nerve injury and fibromyalgia and currently administers four groundbreaking projects for the National Institutes of Health. Under this mantle, he led one the first groups to successfully apply RNAi in vivo for the study of pain. Dr. Jasmin’s other NIH studies include the investigation of gene therapy for pain, cortical modulation of pain behavior in humans, and biochemical anomalies in fibromyalgia.

Dr. Jasmin is a member of several professional societies, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Royal College of Surgeons, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons, the International Association for the Study of Pain, the Society for Neuroscience, and the American Pain Society.

Dr. Jasmin received his bachelor's, medical and doctorate degrees from the University of Montréal in Canada. He fulfilled an internship in surgery and a residency in neurosurgery at Notre-Dame Hospital at the University of Montréal. He completed a research fellowship in pain research with Allan Basbaum, PhD and a clinical fellowship in brain tumor surgery with Charles Wilson, MD at the University of California, San Francisco.

Dr. Jasmin’s clinical expertise includes brain tumor surgery, neurosurgical treatments of pain using neurostimulation and intrathecal pumps, and neurosurgical treatment of spasticity using rhizotomies and intrathecal baclofen. Dr. Jasmin is trained in irradiation therapy for tumors, pain, and abnormal movements using the Gamma Knife and stereotactic radiosurgery and he conducts neurostimulation for the treatment of depression and abnormal movement. Dr. Jasmin is one of the only neurosurgeons in California to specialize in pain management and draws on his clinical research to bring state-of-the-art treatments to his patients.

Committed to cross-discipline collaboration, Dr. Jasmin partners closely with expert oncologists, radio-oncologists, physicists, spine surgeons, neurologists, psychiatrists and physical therapists to create comprehensive treatment plans for patients using cutting-edge techniques.

Practicing medicine for three decades has taught me to look beyond MRIs and biopsies for true hope—- something essential to recovery. Each person has the right to choose what makes sense to him or her, and it is my goal to give patients the courage to embark on a course of treatment with the strength to endure and prevail. Pain is often the greatest obstacle for a patient, and my experience has taught me that reducing pain helps make the day to day events or treatments of the underlying disease much more sustainable. I look to the patient to find a place where truth and hope can co-exist and give them a chance to be cured.
