About Our Practice

I am an Osteopathic physician, board certified in family practice, osteopathic manual medicine, and cranial osteopathy. My vocation is to understand healing. What I do is learn, practice, develop my understanding, and teach people what I have learned. I am interested in helping people look at their health in a broad context, forming partnerships to facilitate healing. I see my role as one who listens with head, heart, and hands…in order to develop an understanding of the person and the problem, and how they relate to each other. Then I try to help the person understand by sharing what I know, what I can do with them, and what experience I have with the problem. We then explore together ways to work toward resolution. I think the three most powerful tools for healing I use on a daily basis are empowerment, education, and encouragement. Important things about therapeutic relationships that I consciously try to incorporate in my work are: 1) the creation of space (both physical and emotional) in which patients can feel safe and supported, 2) confidentiality and hospitality, 3) time for silence, 4) my focused attention when we are together, 5) the intention to understand the needs of the patient, and 6) my promise to continue both my personal and professional growth. I especially enjoy working with children, youth, and persons involved in the performing arts. I do not limit the practice to any particular set of disease processes. My personal health practices include yoga in its many aspects which include diet and regular spiritual practices, involvement in music, and being in relationship with my wife, kids, family, friends, staff and colleagues, and patients and their families. I am a member of the musicians wellness team at Michigan State University, and teach there as well as for the Hand Institute of Michigan, and Sparrow Hospital. My partner is a physiatrist, Marcy Schlinger, who also does electromyography and manual medicine, including cranial osteopathy. We have seven associates, who independently practice in our suite, with the following areas of practice: physical therapy, psychotherapy, acupuncture and chinese herbology, feldenkrais (movement re-education), clinical massage, polarity therapy, reiki, and a minister who does sacred ceremonies, weddings, and counselling.
