Post-op X-ray: Thoracic Scoliosis Surgery

Back to Image Library

The patient, a 14-year-old boy underwent spine surgery to treat a severe left-side thoracic idiopathic scoliosis.  This post-operative AP x-ray (anteroposterior; front to back) shows how rods and screws (instrumentation) were implanted to treat the first level of the thoracic spine through the second level of the lumbar spine (T1-L2).  Before the procedure, the patient's scoliosis measured 123-degrees.  The surgical intervention reduced the abnormal curve to 20-degrees.  You may notice increased space between the left side of the spine and the rib cage.
