Lateral X-ray View of Spinal Instrumentation to Stabilize AIS

Back to Image Library

This is a post-operative x-ray view of the spine from the side.  Spine surgery was performed to treat severe adolescent idiopathic scoliosis in this 18-year-old female.  You can see where instrumentation (eg, rods, screws) were implanted to stabilize the spine.  The extensive AIS surgery involved removing a vertebral body (T9), and a 5-rib thoracoplasty.  Thoracoplasty involves shortening certain ribs to reduce the size of a rib hump.  The outcome of this patient's surgery resulted in improving her sagittal contour to a 30-degree kyphosis.
