Good Food Picks: Plant-based proteins and omega-3 fatty acids

Vokshoor and Chaparro share some suggestions of good food picks to improve spinal health. (An added bonus: these choices will benefit your overall health, too.)

1. Plant-based proteins, like lentils, beans, nuts, and chia seeds, provide the nutrients you need without causing the inflammation typically associated with animal-based (processed/red meat) proteins. These foods can also help meet some of your nutritional needs. For instance, beans contain antioxidants, fiber, and an array of important vitamins and minerals.

2. Salmon, flaxseeds, and seaweed are good sources of omega-3 fatty acids, which can help reduce inflammation and benefit bone and tissue health. Other cold water fish can also bring the same benefit. (The Arthritis Organization says that taking omega-3 fish oil supplements can be a viable alternative.)
