Home from surgery

Started by Trish323 on 10/27/2012 5:29pm

Since yesterday. Managing pain but sleeping in between doses.
Have not pooped since Monday; but I don't feel the urge to. Taking MOM for it.
It turns out my surgery was bigger than expected,
Xlif and PLIF was supposed to be 3 disks but the PLIF is about 12 in long.
I have surgical pain in both areas I guess to be expected but R HIP, groin knee foot have nerve pain and lots of numbness. I was told nothing at all about using ice or heat?? Not to change bandage until doc visit nov 6 th??
Will try to come back later xo

Hi Trish,,,,,was waiting to hear from you,,,,,My surgeon said it was worse than he expected,,,I wasn't told anything either about ice or heat but Renee says ice for nerves,,Glad everything went well...I am 12 days post op...and taking MOM....too,,,lol,,,,omg..I need it sooo bad....Pain levels are less...but still have trouble in and out of bed and recliner...Using my walker and my wonderful commode.....I have 26 staples that I think he is taking out tuesday...The only thing that worries me is that my feet swell..I guess from not using them much? I will tell the doc though...Other than me..how are you doing....just remember every day you will feel a lil better....I guess i'll try to get some sleep...talk to you tomorrow...Glad your'e home...:)

@Lorine: thanks on your update, I was thinking about you and how you have been getting along. I'm glad it is as you say, a little bit better each day. Surgical side is from coccyx to bra strap and from middle to waistline under hip. That side seems mostly surgical pain. The other right sight seems all nerve pain, numbness from groin hip to inner foot right toe. Then the only weird thing is my tongue! Numb in front R quadrant.. Has been since I woke up from surgery. I have abdominal gas and pains every so often but no movement... I wonder how long I should wait before I call doc!
I get up and walk around my kitchen family room about 4- 5 times per day.. About 5 mins each time.
Lorine my email is in my profile, feel free to email!!

Hi Trish...just read your update and looked for your email but it wasn't there....unless I missed something...you sound like you have been through alot...hope your feeling a little bit better...but what happened to your tongue...lol...it's funny cos when I woke up...my right hand...up to my elbow was numb for 2 days...I do have carpal tunnel..and sleep with a brace on it at night....But when i woke up for surgery..ughhh...my poor arm...I dont know how much walking I should be doing really..The doc said go to the mailbox and back..then go to the next house and next house..so on and so on each day...I ventured out to walmart today with hubby and my son...didn't stay long,..but I am paying for it tonight....I feel so helpless....so many things need to be done in the house...I live with all men...huhhh....they dont see the things we see.....and when i get dressed and put on a little makeup just so I don't look pale...they say...oh..your'e better....I'm like...wait ....let me put on my pajamas and look sick again...lol...Thank god for pain meds....I would hurt sooo much with out them...I still have numbness in my toes and electricity in my legs and maybe a place I would not like to mention...lol...but have to hang in there..time will tell....I wonder how do we know if we over do it...?..i mean with the pain meds and all...maybe we can do too much and not realize it...? I don't know...i still can't believe this is the place where we have all come to because of our backs.....not the site..just life in general...I was sooo strong....what happened..?,,,but anyway..hope your haveing a good nigh and less pain...i am going to bed and tomorrow will be a better day..and I am not gonna over do it...One more thinkg...My feet have been swelling up since the surgery..not sure if it's because I am no t on them enough or what...guess I'll ask the doc on tuesday...Have a good nite...lorine

Lorine,
Throw away your make-up! That was too funny, my family said the same thing.
You'll know if you've done too much after the fact, at least that's been my experience. Are you elevating your feet? I would give the Dr. a call on that one.
Hope your days continue to get better,
Grey.

Lorraine and Trish,

Throw away the MOM, seriously! There is some meds called peri-collace. It is in tablet form and does wonders! I know that it can be found at CVS, just ask the Pharmacist. I am going to bed (can't hold my eyes open). More tomorrow. xo
Thinking of y'all!

@ Lorine,
My husband has been doing an amazing job helping me. I'm not ungrateful but I understand what you mean about the men just not seeing things... I guess we girls are just so used to multitasking and they only do one task at a time. It's all I have so ill take it and hope when I am independent enough my work here will be manageable ! Still have the numb tongue and dry mouth. I purchased biotene spray and that is really helping. Pain on my right hip, groin thigh shin and foot is a raw kind of pain. Nerve pain. It has gotten so bad and if my clothes or sheet touches it it feels like somebobody is rubbing sandpaper across abraised raw skin,,,. So finally I couldn't stand it anymore and asked my husband to firmly wrap my foot ankle and thigh in Saran Wrap . I'm not sure what made me think to do this but IT WORKS!!! I had a great 3 hour nap today!
I feel like my thigh muscles have gotten weaker instead of stronger. How are you?

I'm doing fine...just ready to get it behind me. It will be two surgeries...nov. 2 through the front, then nov 6 through my back. I'm not sure what type you had. I guess my worry is trying to get back to work. I plan to be off through Christmas but the doc is saying 8 to 12 weeks. I am a school secretary. They won't let me come back with any restrictions.

I'll take it as it comes. Thanks for asking. I hope you are getting stronger...you continue to be in my prayers!

I understand the nerve pain that you are experiencing. Since I had my first surgery in 2009, I have had the same kind of issue. Thick tight socks are my best friend. Granted in the summer, I do look so goofy wearing sandals and socks. I can't stand to wear shoes. I have found that very light tennis shoes work, but for only so long.

Hi girls,
Today my prescription for Percocet dropped from 10/325. 1 tab every 4 hours. I was taking 2. I am in a lot of pain, achy, tender type pain. My right leg food continue to scream. The best pain management for me has been sleeping. Usually sleep at 4 hour intervals. Walking as much as possible but the nerve pain in my foot is hampering to do more.

@dana..I will check out peri colace and the thick socks!

@ Jane.. Stay strong xo

@Lorine. My left leg and foot is pretty swollen. Not sure why.
I just feel like whining and crying. How are you today Lorine

I just wanted to let you all know to have your doctor write a prescription for a cold therapy machine. Uses Ice and about 1 inch water. You can wrap a thin soft plastic around back or just lay on it. Circulates ice cold water for hours. It will be your best friend I swear! I am 12 wks post op and have been so miserable. Pain pills don't work very well. The ice machine is amazing. :) I had a 360 hybrid adr and fusion. L3,L4,L5,S1. LONG recovery. Good luck you all!!

Jane, my doctor told me 6 wks for desk job and 12 for my job (school bus driver) I hate to burst bubble but I am 12 weeks out and the fusion is not growing yet. So I cannot work. And I can't sit for more than 10 minutes. I really wish the doctors would have given me worst case scenario. The 360 surgery is so hard to recover from so maybe yours is different. I have a 16 inch incision from top of rib cage to bikini line. I still can't lift anything, vacuum, clean, anything. :( Going insane....I see my house falling apart. My poor husband can't keep up with four kids and a house and his job. This was my 2nd surgery so maybe that is why this has been awful. Plus I just turned 40 so old age???!!! I really hope you get back to work soon. If you have desk job you could probably do it if you get up and move every 10 minutes. My tailbone pain is awful. Plus physical therapy 3x a wk for 2 hours at a time. Who has time to work.

Hi everyone! Well I'm home & think with everything that's happened, I'm doing ok. I was in the hosp. a total of 5 days...they originally said a week.

I've told myself I will not push myself bc I don't want to mess it up. I can't wait to see my doc about an exercise plan which I know right now is too soon. I just want to get well.

I don't have little ones at home (only grandchildren that come once in a whimle) so I'm fortunate in that way, meaning nothing too, demanding from the kids.

I'd love to hear from you if I can help in any way. Although my condition may not be just as yours is, I will still help in any way I can.

Blessings & best of luck!

Jane

Hello Everyone,,As usuall Im going to through out their my nursing experience,,,those of U who know me,,know I dont give advice unless im certain,,Im an old timer on this site....Glad to hear you are all home from surgeries,,,words to the wise,,,Slow down guys,,healing takes atleast 3 mos.dont push yours selves,,but dont lay stagnet,,walking is good to help w bowls n gas,,Metamucill or dulcolax w stimulant works best,,very important to get bowls moving otherwise causes pressure and pain,,the stimulant will eleiviate u straining..absolutly no stretching or lifting,,increase ur fluids X3..atleast 48oz daily,,increase protein intake to help w muscle repair because they cut through them to perform surgerry. At ur first post op visit they R gonna try to decrease pain meds,,,,try not to let them,,med regimine is usually ,,pain med, muscle relaxant, and an anti-inflamatory,,in the begining most pain is from inflammation so cool those nerves down w ice,,20min on 20min off. Im always happy to help w any info if needed....Trish, sorry I dissapeared for awhile,,but I was thinkin of you,,I was dealing w my own mess and was stuck in a dark whole,,I pulled myself out and came running back to U guys,,,SO IM BACK...:) :) :) RENE :)

Hello everyone How is everyone today...

Just wondering @Renee....It will be a month since surgery on the 15th....have to call doc for a refill on pain meds....just wondering..where should i be at right now....? He wanted to try to lessen them 2 weeks ago but he gave me the same ..percoset 5-325..I still take 2 in the morning...2 in the afternoon and 2 at night..sometimes i need another one in about an hour or 2 after i get up in the morning...and I have some hydrocodone I take in between if needed...percoset work better for my pain...It's still bad in the mornings...Is that normal..? And as far a physical...I'm tired...and very pale...my hands are sooo white....I dont know if its from the meds or lack of iron....and what should I be doing physically...I don't know...FYI...had a fusion..laminectomey and diskectomy at L3-4..any help and info would be greatly appreciated...thanks.....:)

LOL the makeup comment. They say ohhh you look great you are so much better.....so I stay ugly now. @ Lorraine. Do not feel bad about still needing 6 pills a day. I am on 4 a day now at 12 wks almost 13 weeks. I did ask to be sent to pain management since my doctor was trying to cut mine to only 60 pills for a month. That is only 2 wks. So, don't feel bad. Most doctors now are not continuing long term with pain meds. Especially women tend to over do it. Men lay in bed for a month and moan and groan after having a mole removed. lol So do not over do it! I did and now it is worse. Thankfully doctor said I did not damage fusion. But when you lose your walking ability on top of this it is so painful. And really ice works soooooo much better on me than meds. If I didn't have that machine I would be miserable. Good luck!!! Keep me updated!!!

I am trying to stay off of pain meds as muh as possible so I can drive. Getting depressed bc I cannot do what I want to do...drive when I want, etc. help!

Actually I am very thankful for my blessings.

Jane, join the club. I don't remember the last time I drove. I feel like a little kid asking hubby if he can take me here or there...then he asks what I need and I end up just having him pick it up...Now I'm a hermit! So yes, the depression starts to settle in making itself at home.
Keep posting, it really helps to talk about it.

I went to the doc Monday & told him all was great. I asked for less potent meds so I can function better, ESP driving. Well now I fell terrible most of the time. Suppose to go bk to work on dec 26 but now, dont know how I can do it. You can have no restrictions to go bk to work. Any suggestions?
