Diskogram

Started by jon4793 on 04/27/2011 11:01am

I had a diskogram in prep of L5/S1 fusion, and L4/L5 "soft stabilization". I believe the surgery to have been unsuccessful. The bone doesn't appear to be "growing" and I have a broken screw already. But that is all for another discussion. MY QUESTION is this: What does it mean if you don't experience any discomfort as they stick a needle into your spine? The Dr. who performed the diskogram on me seemed to be taken aback a bit. He would say "That doesn't hurt?" And my reply is NOT Really for every point of entry. I was prepared for terrible pain and it never came. I'm in pain every day, no exceptions, but when I was poked with needles; Nothing conclusive? Comments?

Hi Jon,
Wow,my question to you is then why did the doc do the fusion without anything conclusive?

Hi, I agree with Nurse Nancy, why do the surgery if the discogram showed not pain during the procedure. I had one done and I about jumped off the table when they put the dye in my disc. I thought that was the purpose of the procedure to see what is causing you pain.

Nurse Nancy and Breadgirl, Thanks for responding. I am totally confused now. Is it possible that nerve damage disallowed pain in the procedure? Pre-op test for reflex in right foot was odd too. The doc said I had no reflex there, and I remember that I didn't. This sucks, the fusion isn't growing bone, and a screw is broken. I feel like it moves sometime. I don't want to keep eating pain killers, but I almost wish I hadn't had the surgery. It's hard to say if I really feel a whole lot better.

jon4793, sorry to hear your having so many problems after your surgery. I had a fusion at l5-s1 March 2011 and so far I think it was successful. I have xray every four weeks and my bone growth looks good. How in the world did you break a screw? I thought they were titanium and that was unbreakable! Wish I had more info or could help. I understand about taking those pain killers. I am still on them after my surgery but am starting to ween off of them.
