Started by BriannasMommy on 03/25/2010 7:37am

I AM LOOKING FOR ANY INFORMATION ABOUT SURGERY TO REMOVE SURGERY YEARS AFTER A SPINALFUSION.. CAN ANYONE ASSIST ME WITH WHERE TO LOOK FOR ANSWERS? SO FAR I HAVE NOT FOUND ANYTHING HERE. THE DR STATES IT SHOULD BE REMOVED BECAUSE ITHAS SERVED IT'S PURPOSE. IS THIS A VERY PAINFUL SURGERY,HOW LONG IS THE SURGERY AND RECOVERY?

I DON'T SEE HIM AGAIN UNTIL NEXT MONTH BUT HE HIMSELF HAS NOT GIVEN ME ANY INFO.

I am sorry Fallson that I didn't get more direct with my answer. I guess I had to many irons in the fire. I know that I included u in my greeting, but after I looked at it or scanned it w/my eyes, I didn't see if I told you to have the surgery or not. It is not something that I want to say one way or another. I know all the difficulty that us guys are going through and I wouldn't do it if I were u. As a matter of fact, I would be enjoying life probably if I would have gone naturopathic. I wish I would have asked questions b4 and researched the answer myself. I don't know if what you have or where and the main thing is, that I am not a doc, but I sure wish that I could tell you more of what to do here or an answer. All I can say is that my disk herniation that was in my neck, was small and was told by a NS that I should've never had the surgery that I didn't need it...IT was such a small hern. that I could've went to an Acupunturist and got relief...BUT, I am instead in bed, laying here doing nothing much that is interesting...BUT I AM TRYING TO HELP YOU.
So, The Lord has a reason 4 everything and it is just easier to accept it and know that He is only doing what is good 4 u. I would think hard and heavy @ going through with it. See if there are any alternatives b4 u do it...PLEASE. I wouldn't or couldn't stand to see you here talking @ the pain that you are going through...k? Take care and God Bless.:))<3 Karen

Is it totally necessary to get fusion equipment removed?

I sure do appreciate the advice CarrieR and I will see, but Knoxvill it probably @ 8hrs. away, in which isn't too bad. What is the docs name and do u have a contact number for them. I am desperately trying to find an answer to WHY I am in such a shape. All that I had done was my neck surgery, then everything fell to pieces it seemed. I was hurting mostly in my upper body until I was hit in the back with the NERVE BLOCK.. SO, you guys be careful who you chose to do that. I did not know it, but I went to a Pain Clinic in Southaven, MS that had been closed b4 I went in to have mine done. I THINK THEY SHOULD HAVE TO DISCLOSE THAT INFORMATION. YOU KNOW, BECAUSE NOW I AM DISABLED AND USED TO WORK SO HARD..AND LOVED IT.
Now, I am just barely getting by day to day and there is always PAIN. SOMEWHERE. I wake up, when I sleep that is, in such stiffness. IT IS LIKE I AM RIGID and like a tree branch that has been FROZEN or something. I sure hope that the new NL that I am seeing now, will get to the bottom of it. He seems thorough, but so did the last number of NL that I saw and they had NO CLUE. I know that I can't turn, twist or move much 4 that matter or I WILL PAY. I really don't know what to do.
I heard this story yesterday that I thought that I would pass on. IF ANYONE IS GETTING A SPINAL PUNCTURE( SPINAL TAP) BE CAREFUL IF YOU DO IT. A WOMAN TOLD ME YESTERDAY THAT A FRIEND OF HERS WENT IN TO GET ONE DONE AND SHE ....DIED. YES, SHE HAD THE TEST TO WHERE THEY TAKE THE FLUID OUT AND IT WAS OUTPATIENT. SHE WENT HOME AND WAS GETTING A HEADACHE, SO SHE HAD TO RETURN, BUT THEY DID NOT GET TO HER IN TIME. SHE FINALLY GOT THROUGH AFTER WAITING IN THE ER WAITING ROOM, BUT THEY COULDN'T SAVE HER AND IT WAS THAT TEST. I JUST WANTED TO WARN EVERYONE TO BE EXTRA CAREFUL...I HAVE DONE MADE UP MY MIND, I AM NOT HAVING THAT TEST, IF THEY SCHEDULE IT THAT IS. I HAVEN'T EVEN BEEN APPROACHED TO HAVE IT AND I HAVE BEEN WANTING THAT TEST DONE TO FIND ANSWERS, BUT NOW, NOOOOO, I AM NOT GOING TO DO IT BECAUSE I HAD A MYELOGRAM DONE AND ALMOST DIED, SO I KNOW I AM NOT GOING THERE. THERE HAS TO BE ANOTHER WAY...SURELY.
BE SAFE ALL AND GOD BLESS ALWAYS. :))<3 Karen

Hello Everyone! I am new to this site. Unfortunately NOT new to back pain and surgery. I had an accident in 03 at 35 yr old due to a rescue dog of mine. I damaged my back and my rt hip. Long story short I had 3 surgeries and one I came donewith a staphinfection that doc's didn't catch that went on for months. My PCP finally put me in the hospital, had a port put in and I had antibiotic for 8 mnths due to osteomyolitis by then. I am still in such SEVERE pain NOTHING helps. I am starting to forget what my life was like before all this. I recently had a eval with a great surgeon (I didn't think there was any hope left for me any more). He doesn't make apt. he takes your films and then calls if he thinks there is something he can do for you. I received a phone call from his office stating he wanted to see me (shocking me). So my hubby and I went. His eval was this......my hardware from my L4-S1 is causing problems to surrounding nerves and facet joints. He was so kind and told me I was way to young to live like this. I shut down at that point and just starting sobbing. My husband had to take over. Trust me, I am not a meek person, but I have just had it. I couldn't believe there was even a possibility of my pain being lessoned. His bad news.....he is backed up 8 months. He did offer to send me to someone he would have operate on him and his family. I decided to wait. Well, I am now up to that 8 mnth point. My surgery for removing my hardware in in 5 weeks guys. I am so nervous, but so excited at the thought of no more ESI or oral steroids. No more crying because I can't live like I used to. No more trying to just get thru a day. Is it possible that my life could be better? I don't expect perfect. I know there has been a lot of damage to my back, I get it. I just want to have someone of a resemblance of my old life back. Anyone out there could give me a bit of hope that this could work? God bless you all who are trapped in bodies that just cause us pain. Thanks for anyone who even took the time to read my story. Oh, I had a lami at first, then cut out the bottom part of my spine that was shattered (due to the accident), I had my rt hip repaired...it was a labral tear, then 2.5 years ago was my fusion. My osteomyolitis was in 05. I was on vancomyocin for 8 mnth total for that. My surgeon is so kind he go to 3rd world countries each year to operate on children pro bono. I like that about him. So at least I can say he has a kind heart. Wish me luck. Take care everyone. lc

Hi
I had correction for Scheuermann's Kyphosis on 29th of November 2011
things have not gone great for me since i got a serious infection that went to the metal in my back.
they have tried to clear the infection by a seriously high does of antibiotics i thought i was on the mend but in the last week my crp has gone back up to 58 so its getting worse.
Now there is talks of doing the surgery again taking out the infected metal and putting in sterile ones.
I know i dont have much of a choice but i am looking for advise on this.
I am sick to the thought of having to go through the recovery process again and my biggest fear that i could get an infection again.
I hope some one can give me advise on this

I am a long time chronic pain sufferer (from the age of 13 until the present i'm now 54 almost 55)I have had 23 surgeries from amputations and reattachment of 5 fingers in 1971 to spinal fusion and a 6 bypass heart surgery.
I have been to over 80 doctors of virtually every kind except OBGYN as an adult and because of my very first doctor who reattached my mangled fingers in 1971 and my mother being a trauma nurse and having cancer during the same time period my doctor, since I was not going to be able to go to school ,made me read his medical books along with my mother. he even gave us tests. He was the last decent doctor I have ever been to.
I have since spent most of my leisure time reading everything from the Merck's manuals to the New England Journal of medicine.
I have made liars out of almost everyone of them.
The main thing to remember when it comes to your spine is that a CHIROPRACTOR is just a glorified physical therapist. Many are simply a danger to society. Some on rare occasion ( and this doesn't sound like one) can do some good.
But and this is a huge but (Kardashian in scope) after you have had any type of spinal surgery or procedure the most dangerous thing one can do is go to a chiro or listen to one!
After all if he was that good of a chiro (not doctor) he would have cured you and you would have never needed a surgery in the first place. Chiro's are just like doctors in one aspect ,they want to make money off you in any way they can.One of my oldest friends is a chiro and he is the one that told me first and always tells his patients that he can only do so much when it comes time for surgical intervention is the point you should never see one again.
Unless confirmed by CT ,X-ray or MRI scan that the surgical prosthetic used in your spine is broken ,loose or has moved in some manner they should NOT ever be moved. Just the fact that any surgery even minor ones requiring you to be put to sleep can kill you. So you figure it out take the advice of a so called friend or the advice of a doctor who has done possibly hundred or even thousands of mostly sucsesful surgeries. Or advice from a person that might actually have caused your problem in the first place.

Karen, this ones for you. I know it's been a while since you posted about your pain. I think I know what was or is wrong with you, I have the same thing. Have you had a Myelogram?? I think you have Arachnoiditis OR cauda equina syndrome, both are permanent disorders and cause a great deal of pain and numbness. It took a long tiem for me to get a diagnoses. It is really frustrating, that I know. And sue, well I found out is almost impossible to sue a NS, the Dr's seem to ALL stick together. It is just a darn shame that they can cause permanent damage and WE have to suffer the rest of our lives, like to punish us, when WE did nothing wrong, THEY DID, and THEY just continue to live their nice sweet lives.... I just don't get it!!! Good luck Karne I hope you have found some relief. Feel free to write me anytime.....

Why... remove it? The surgery may put you at risk for other problems. There is always scar tissue with incisions.

Hey, I don't know if anyone can help I've searched the Internet for answers with no luck so far. I had a spinal fusion 29th may 2011 in January I started getting nasty cyst boils on base of spine, bottom and groin, I asked about this on my follow up appointment in February and they said it had nothing to do with what they had done, my op wasn't a success as I was still in pain. My gp made me an appointment to see general surgery to get these things cut out as no amount of antibiotics was shifting them. The general surgeon transferred me for an MRI as they believe the pins are infection and there is a track leading from pins to these cyst things. I'm waiting for results now, had MRI yesterday. Has anybody ever heard of this?

hi briansmommy I think if i were you I would get a second opinion . I asked my surgeon about removal of mine he told me he was against taking it out. and if you think about it your spine is stronger with hard wear in there maybe theres a reason your dr wants to take it out.I guess would have to say it will prob hurt about like they put it in going thru muscles again. and exercising all the stuff you went thru before good luck with you decision

I had C5 C6 C7 fused in January 2012. Within 3 months I had a problem and wore a hard collar till Nov 2010. Last Nov 2011 I had andother xray to confirm whet showed up in Mar 2012, the C7 screws had backed out.

Last week, Jun 13 2012 I went to see another doctor--that I started seeing 2 months after the surgery because the original doctor 'screwed up' the fusion. The screws has not backed out .42 cm. (from .33 Cm last Nov 2011.)

Next week he will perform another surgery to 1- remove all the screws, then replace all the screws at a different angle, 2- replace the cadaver bone between C6 and C7 which NEVER totally fused with a netallic fixture and also lock or clamp the BACK of the vertabre of C6 and C7 so I won't have to wear a collar. (Just about to start a new job and wearing a soft or hard collar would not be the best thing for a new employee.)LMSHATRAW@MSN.COM

hi brians mom i had a appointment other day i asked my surgeon if they would take out the screws out, he told me the only reason would be if som thing broke they may take that out but kind of sounds like they would fix and leave it in there. I dont have any problem with the metal just muscle pain in a other area. unless you have had somthing move and its rubbing on a nerve did the dr. say what was wrong somthing not rite in that area.

Hello Diana, I wanted to get back to u @ Arachnoiditis. To be honest, yes I do believe u and that it is very possible it could be AA.
Yes, I have had a Myelogram with spinal tap headache I even had to go back to the Hospital to ge a blood patch done. I had that headache a week and even vomited 4 @ 15 or more hrs..IT was aweful. I also have had ESI's, where one hit me in my Thoracic and it felt like I was being electrocuted or something(bolt of lightening). I really thought that the ESI was the culprit and where I got the AA from, because even a NL saw a place in my back that he didn't even know what it was. He said that it was out of his area of expertise..hmmmm? that is scary when a NL doesn't even know what he is looking at. I wonder if that is where I was hit by the ESI?
I hurt in my neck, back and legs...and my arms are weak/numb too. I have this burning skin that feels like sheets of fire and even had places feel like an ice cube is placed on it!hmmm...everywhere and u never know what is coming either.
I also have pain in my ribs because they told me that I had a fractured rib...but they said that it was old...but where is it from..is what I want to know..WHY?
IT seems utterly impossible to even get relief and for others to really understand and get it.:((
I appreciate u, for taking the time responding.

IT takes the ears of others to listen to everyone's cares and u took the time to care...and I thank u for that.:D
I just pray that u have found some relief, as well. Yes, I did find some, but it is temporary, but we will take temporary over nothing at all. :P
I am seeing a Traditional Chinese Medicine(TCM) man and he is doing some really strong Accupuncture on me and says that I do need extensive treatment. There is nothing to it really. It is only in our minds to worry @ those tiny needles the size of a hair. They don't hurt. If anything..."they hurt so good". I must say that he is treating me extensively and it is thoroughly helping me, because I limped into his office and walked out.:D
I would reccomennd u try it, because it is the only thing that has helped me thus far and I have been in the bed...for the past 4 or 5 yrs..on and off, but I can't do anything or I will pay for it. My muscles hurt while I am layin in bed. I don't have to be doing anything, for them to hurt at all and if, I use them to reach or pull...ohhhh no, u r talking @ hurting for a week because of it.
I can't stand up long, for the middle of my back will burn like fire and I find it eases, only when I lean straight up against a wall. IT helps, but is still there...until I lay flat on my back.
I sure hope that u have got ur AA until some kind of control too and are doing better. I will keep u in my prayers.:))<3
Take care and God Bless u Diana. :D<3 Karen

I had my fusion hardware removed eight months ago and I am doing great. My stamina has gone from 30 minutes to about three hours of being up and around doing stuff, and my back pain is greatly reduced. I had the hardware in my back for six years of pure Hell. My sciatica is still as bad as ever, but back pain is much better. I am so glad I made the decision. The doctor I used works out of Phoenix and is Dennis Crandall. The recovery was about a month of being very careful and then back to many activities of daily living. The recovery is a fraction of what it was when the rods were put in.

Guys, my problem is that the Docs can't see behind the titanium plates and no one will even look or consider that there is a problem there. IT has to be, for I hurt so bad in and around my neck. Now, it could be referred pain fromt the 5 now disk herniations that I have in my back.
IT looks like something is progressing in that area. i can feel something sticking me in the middle of my bacl...like an axe is just stuck there..YOWCH!! I can feel pressure in that area too.
I was suppose to go see an Orthopedic Sugeon tomorrow, but while researching, ran accross how this Doc was rated and it wasn't good, so have decided against it. I am trying to find a Neuroradilogist or good Neurosurgoen, becaise.of this This is just what one of the Orthopedic Surgeon's paitiens that said. "Do not let him operate on your back. See a neurosurgeon. He has a history of bad outcomes. I wish I had known this before I let him operate on me."
Hearing this statement was scary enough, for I know that I will most likely need surgery and can't trust this kind of boo-boos, by an Ortho. I am looking for a really good NS in the Memphis area ir ckise ti ut. I have got to find one, if it takes me time to do it, but I sure wish someone could refer me to someone that had good outcomes his surgeries and a good bed-side manor.
I wish the best to u all. Take care and God Bless always.:D<3

The original NS that performed the surgery has released me as a patient, with no warning even.. I don't understand why. I only want to get my pain issue resolved and asked him to find some way to look into my neck to make sure @ what it said on one of my reports that mentioned my plates had moved.( I read this report briefly, while waiting in my little room...then, they wouldn't give me a copy of it either)
The NS, just sent me to a very bad NL that did some rough tests like sticking EMG needles down into my neck(the thick needles were an inch long) and I suffered for two weeks after that. IT made things worse. Then this NS made wise cracks, instead of being serious @ my issue..saying "I don't know, you might not have leprosy, but you might have a prostate problem." Can u believe a Doc talked to me like that and my son(14) and my mom were there. They were shocked at how there was no consideration of how much pain that I was in. No, he was too busy making wise-cracks.:P
My plates have been in there for 6yrs and I am so worried at how I am going to get anyone to help me get these things out. I just pray that my neck stays stable and whatever is going on...that there is no spinal cord compromise...The Lord is watching over me, I know...for, I can tell He is taking care of me somehow. It is like I have some purpose still to be here or something.:)
I am better, if u want to consider HOW much pain, I was in back in '07 and '08. My legs started hurting/cramping, in '07....around a month after that thrid nerve ESI that hit something. hmmmm? Now, in '08...the pain was so unbearable that I was living in bed...wreathing around and experienced the worse time, I believe, was the worst time that I have ever had in my life. IT was way worse than having a baby. I had 2boys. I natural. So, I get that horrid pain.
In all actuallity, there were times I wanted to be put out of my misery and joked w/the MRI speciallist @ "did he have a shot gun", I hurt so bad...but the pain was so horrific that a person would be to be taken from the misery. I made it through that hard time and IT was the hardest thing that I have EVER been through.
At the present day, I tolerate the pain. I have gotten pretty good t that. I have learned to endure a lot...a tremedous amount that most people would be finding themselve in a ER, I bet.
I am a very strong person and a lot of people just don't see that..since I am a girly girl w/blonde hair and am very easy going...I guess and I found that out, after going through all of this that I am stronger, for 'what doesn't kill u, makes u stronger".
I have had a lot of things to happen in my life, but nothing that took over my mind and body, as THIS pain has, but must say that I have found that I can endure so many things(in my body...and out) with God right there beside me.:D I am so thankful to Him, for He has carried me through many a day.
tI pray that He watches over u guys too and helps yall to feel better.:D
Take care and God Bless always.:D<3 Karen

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

I HAD MY HARDWARE REMOVED 3 WEEKS AGO. I A SPINAL FUSION 2 YRS. AGO.. I STARTED HAVING PROBLEMS AND ALL MY EXRAYS LOOK GOOD. STILL HAVING TO TAKE IT EASY. THIS SURGERY DIDN'T LAST AS LONG. BUT I AM HAVING ALOT OF PAIN STILL. MY DR. SAID HE DOESN'T TAKE OUT HARDWARE UNLESS HIS PATIENT IS IN PAIN.

I'm considering a l5s1 discectomy due to extreme leg pain from herniation, and my dr is recommending removal of old hardware simply because he's going to be "in there" anyway. The hardware is from a L4L5 fusion 5 1/2 years ago. It will make surgery a bit more extensive (disc herniation would be left side only) and I'm not sure what to do. Is it worth the extra pain/recovery time to have it removed if it's not bothering me? What are the chances it will need to be removed in the future? I'm honestly afraid of another surgery as the recovery from the fusion was quite painful.... But if will help to avoid future surgeries, I'd be more inclined to do it. Any advice?

Dear Becky, I sure am glad that u got urs removed and had a compassionate Doc...that listened to u, when u told them @ the pain. I am sorry that u r still having pain.:((
IT is so hard to find a NS that will preceed fruther to find the answer. It seems that some of them...don't want to use thier heart and consider others.:P I hate to say that, but there is something terribly wrong in there, in my neck..., but nothing has become of it... They won't look!!!
My pain is unbearable, at times...and I know that something is wrong. I have neck tenderness and pain, numbness that stays, weakness in all of my limbs...especially, the left side.. IT burns, pops, cracks, etc..
I even saw a report, when there last...saying that my plates have moved...and THEY are just ignoring it..hmmmm!!! The NS that done the surgery has released me, but only after I showed him the letter from the Doc saying that there was compression by a screw, from his surgery on me.. U can say I am up a tallll tree, because no one wants to touch anyone else's surgery and most will go all around that issue and bring up other issues., but that is NOT it. Ohh, I am overwhemingly frustrated by it all and just pray that I will find someone that will look further. (w/a Camera or cut me open even.)
Best 2 u...take care and God Bless always.:D<3 K

Dear Lori, I don't understand why the Doc wants to do it either, unless he feels that it would be a good thing. IT could be applying some kind of pressure hat caused u to have to have the second surgery...that would be my guess, since, I had C5-C6 spin.disk. and now, I am having all kinds of problems. I want mine out, but I don't care how much pain that I am in...my NS won't even look in there w/a Camera...much less take them out. He has even released me, as his patient. Go figure that one.:P hmmmm, I don't understand why they even take that hypocritc oath, if they are not going to stand by it!!
Take care all and God Bless always.:D<3.K

Mary,

I would like to know how is life with spinal fusion, I had a spinal fusion L4 S1 about 4 months ago. My work is sometimes a little hard. In your case (you are nurse) you must lift weights, bend and twist all day long. Is this a restriction for you? I am a little concerned, I don´t know if some day I will be able to install a tyre of my car, lift a baby or carry 5 galons of beer.
Also, there is vague information on what activities I can do. They say that I will be able to play tennis, but I wont be able to lift hevy weights... When some one runs, the impact force is equivalent to a hevy lisfting to the spine...

I was hurt on the job in 1994 and now 8 lumbar surgeries later I am in terrible pain, mostly on the right side where most of the metal is. The said if the spinal chord stimulator did not work, he will remove the metal. I am waiting for comp approval of the stimulator. The pain is so bad I cannot fathom it working but am still hoping. I am wondering if removing the metal will help?

My fusions did take. I am fused completely in the lumbar spine. I had a C67 fusion of the cervical spine that went great. I can throw a football. But the lower back is terrible. That is the job injury. My last surgery of L5 S1 was last March. So I am well within the window of removal. But how much they will remove I do not know.

Hello Little and Carrie...thank u for the well-wishes...and any prayers :)
i am still in the same shape...but i seem worse than i was. I am seeing a new Rheum., because it seems to be connected to all of my muscles. I barely get out of bed, but i continually push myself to keep going.
I am seeing a NL too, but not getting very far...yet. It has been 6yrs. since i have started being sick...right after my neck surgery...which i feel is to be at fault...but my NS, who dropped me as a patient wouldn't look inside. It makes me feel that he didn't care. I guess that had to be the reason, for i have really suffered for a long time...and tried to get him to look in there.
What am i gonna do or what should i do to get SOMEONE to loooook in there?? (can't see my C5-C6, because of an Artifact-black glare or hole from MRI) so, they have got to figure out a way to see...ughh heavy sigh. It makes me wonder...if, any of them are even really looking at any of the MRI's. Sometimes, i wonder if they are missing something.
I hope this finds...all of u guys well...well, as can be. :) Have high hopes that things are gonna turn around...i am sure trying my best. Keep The Lord always with u. God Bless...

I'm 38 years old and in 2004 I had to have a fusion on my L4,L5 & S1. Prior to my surgery I was experiencing sharp pain in my low back & also I was feeling sharp electric in my legs. But since my fusion the pain I feel is only what I can describe as an intense sickening pain in my low back with a lot of pressure in my low back & hardly any pain in my legs except for some ocasional pain & numbness down my legs. I've always have felt that the problem is the rods & screws in my body. I guess my question is, is it possible for me to have the rods & screws taken out after 8 years.
