Do I need surgery?

Started by Bikerjoan on 01/26/2013 9:07pm

20 years ago I had a whiplash injury. I was told I needed surgery then or I could become a quadriplegic if I had another accident. With the aid of a good chiropractor I got rid of the pain and tingling in my arms. I also drove leaving a good space in front of me for reaction time. I have had no pain or problems until now.

I have had a very painful right arm and shoulder for several months, prompting an MRI of my cervical spine. It shows a very tight squeeze for my spinal cord C4-5,5-6,6-7/with bone spurs, It looks bad, yet the pain in my arm and shoulder is the only problem due to a pinched root nerve.

I have been reading and believe with exercises, stretching, swimming , etc. I can find relief for the pain. Then I can avoid surgery.

But then the problem is not solved. I have to ask the doctors if the spinal cord itself is being injured by the pressure. I am 76 and have never had back surgery so far. As I read about all of the pain and suffering from the surgery you people have had,

I am afraid to have it. Basically I feel good and the little stretching I have done so far seems to be reducing the pain.

So I ask myself, what is the greater risk, to have the surgery, or not have surgery???

If you feel good with just the stretching..then I would not do the surgery...I did lower lumbar surgery 3 months ago...and so far no difference..so all that suffering so far for nothing...Unless you get worse...and it interferes with your daily way of life...I wouldn't do it..!

hello bikerjoan I say no don't do it if you can relieve it with swimming stretching then keep doing that I speek from experiance I have had 3 level fusion low back with rods & screws & bigger screws when I look at the x-ray I just go what the hell did I let them do your body is not suppose to have that kind of metal in it. I also have a bad neck with bone spurs no way will i get another surgery. I want to get the metal as much as possible removed. God bless hope this helped.

Thanks for your advice.

Yesterday I saw a second neurosurgeon. When he looked at the MRI he noted that there was a white spot on my spinal cord at C4-5 in addition to the stenosis and bone spurs. That means my spinal cord was injured and it could spread. If I start to get paralysis or numbness in my hands or legs, then I MUST have surgery.

But if it was due to the whiplash more than 25 years ago, it would not be so serious. As I said, other than my right arm and shoulder I do not have pain. Therefore I am waiting to see what happens. I will continue stretching and swimming.
