Multilevel spine fusion/scoliosis surgery

Started by 528351100693979... on 06/24/2016 9:32pm

Hi, my name is Judy. I am 73 yrs old and getting to schedule a surgery date to repair very bad scoliosis and nerve pain that goes to my right leg from lower back. I havery had 2 prior Lumbar laminectomies; now have scar tissue. The Sciatica first was in my left leg for a couple months. By the time I got app for MRI, the pain was definitely in my right leg. I've had 3 or 4 epidural and several cortisone injections to different levels of my spine and also 4 hip joint injections. My pain now is excruciating at times and I can walk only from roomy to room at home...cannot go to grocery store. But with my hairdressers help, I go to the salon for color and cut. I'm going to have the multilevel (3) fusion surgery in about 3 or 4 weeks. My leg is swollen from knee to ankle and skin is very sensitive to touch. I am really afraid of the high risks of this type of surgery!!! I would like to hear from someone who has had this type of surgery...really need some encouragement! !

I had L2 down to S 1 almost 2 years ago and it did help for a few months until I started having failed fusion from disc deterioration.

hi will You just have to pray that its going to help you. I have had two major surgerys on my lumbar and screws rods 8 screws first time, doctor took out cushons and put in bone to fuse it all together. last year in june my back broke under the work he did causing my vertbra to bust and throw my cushion into my spinal chord, i was having severe siatic nerve pain. it was terrible, same surgeon repaired that, my siatic pain comes back and goes away. i feel much better, but i have to be careful my knee likes to give out and if i fall my doctor warned me about fall everything could be broke. The problems I have now is i cant bend i have to use a grabber or use my feet to pick things up. its a life changing experince, and it feels like my lower back is one bone and it is now. when i had my problem my back was like a burning feeling, i now am totally fused except for L-1 i think its the only one not fused down there.. I think you will feel much better i was worried also, i dont think your doctor would risk losing a patient over a surgery you will be fine. take care ps second surgery he put 4 screws and rods and a plate down there. after i woke up from surgery i felt great.

Hello Judy, my name is Kathy and I am also facing multilevel spinal surgery with two fusions, rods, and screws. I assume that you have already had your surgery. How are you doing? It is not easy when we a faced with the choices of a serious surgery or continue to live with constant pain.

No it's not easy and I've had the surgery and got adhesive arachnoiiditis from a failed surgery! Now I'm in excruciating pain 24/7. Every day and night!! Prayers for you both!

You will be fine. I had surgery had nine disc fused. Two rods put in from shoulder blades to S1. They had two cut my vertebra at T10. I feel great compared to what I felt like before surgery. I slept in a chair for three months before surgery because of nerve pain I couldn't lay down. My surgery was in Nov.
