Excrutiating Pain..Help

Started by blanca69 on 02/11/2011 10:06pm

Hello, I'm 41 years old and am in extreme pain. My doctor has diagnosed me with sciatica and I have been in pain since May of 2010. The pain started gradually when I would lay down a throbbing pain would go through my left leg all the way down to my foot, I also have foot "spasms" occasionally. My pain begins in the lower back down the side and into my knee and down front part of lower leg to foot..it is the most debilitating pain I have ever experienced...I can;t sleep as it gets worse at night even with meds..I have had a lower back MRI and everything seems ok...I can't believe it all this pain and the docs can't tell my why I have it....I'm going on 10 months plus with pain EVERYDAY , my whole life is affected..I can't walk for more than 10 minutes ..I wake up with pain to my back -I/m so sore...I do take Vicoprofen 1 pill in am upon rising -1 in the afternoon(3pm) and a Nucynta at bedtime..they somewhat relieve pain but only for a couple of hours at a time...I am at my wits end..I often sit up at night crying because the pain is so terrible...I have taken several different meds but only the ones I mentioned are working for me...but so tired....of pain and having to take pills..I am currently taking physical therapy with limited relief...pains comes back about an hour after sessions. I am going to have knee/hip xrays next week ....Please advise..Thank You

Hi b
Have you seen a neuro specialist?I had the same promplem for 20+ years I went to several doctors with mri in hand they all said the same thing so after years of being treated like a pill head I pulled out the phone book. They took a different type of xray and found that my spine was unstable from being broke at some time.It was pinching my spinal cord.Spinal stenosis and Sponylolisthesis. Its worth your looking into. It has seemed to help.good luck

Thank You for your response..yes I am currently seeing a nuerophysiologist and is totally baffled..I have to end up suggesting other tests because everything"seems" normal..I comment I can't believe everything is "normal" with all the pain I am in..I will suggest the testing you mentioned and see how things go...the clinic where I went to get an MRI of the plexus managed to goof up the test and they repeated lumbar MRI which is of no need to me as I already had one...I'm just so frustrated...

Hello Blanca69,
Your story sounds very fimiliar, I read your post and have felt your pain for 5 months. I had gone to the chiropractor, for a month and then to an orthapedic surgeon. I did have an MRI which shown a herniated disc in my L5 S1 and it was pinching my sciatic nerve. Just had a baby and was in so much pain, I couldn't take pain pills because they make me sick and I cried everyday. I had gone to a Neurologist. He along with the orthapedic sent me for the injections in my back, which did nothing. Finally I couldn't take it anymore the pain was too much. My Neurologist sent me to see a Neurosurgeon in Philadelphia. I had surgery and was feeling better the next day, they said they didn't know until they did the surgery that my disc was ruptured and worse then they thought. Regardless glad to be out of the pain and It's been 9 months. I do still get some pain in my foot (left side) if I do to much, but I still exercise and can enjoy life again. I would see a neurosurgeon due to the nerve pain down your leg. Surgery is not always the answer but it wasn't as bad as I thought it would have been. You just have to make sure you find someone with lots of referrals. Good Luck! hope all goes well.

Hello everyone and thank you for your advice but I am still at the same point I was when I first placed a post...I continue with excrutiating pain..I did have a arteriogram done on my legs to rule out deep vein thrombosis as I did have an episode in my early 20's but all is normal..a soft tissue MRI was done and it did show cellulitis of the muscle and surrounding area..the Doc just told me in was in reaction to the swelling in my leg...well at least they have some type of visual evidence of something wrong..I am on Vicoprofen every 6 hrs with a Lyrica every 12 hrs..I literally crawl downstairs in the early mornings to get everyone ready for the day...Am so frustrated I am so tired of feeling this pain and no one can tell me why I have it except that its probably my sciatic nerve..I pray that one day I wake up pain free ...God Bless
