Spine Issues & Child Abuse

Started by Riverwych on 08/09/2011 10:44am

Greetings folks-

Just interested in knowing how many of you have spinal issues that have no apparent cause and might be connected to abuse as a child.

I'm 41 and have multiple herniated discs (one fusion at c6/7) but that's not too unusual for someone in their forties. However, also have cervical spondolyosis (or however that one is spelled), cervical arthritis, cervial radiopathy, occipital neuralgia, and obviously with all this - severe chronic pain. My surgeon has said the only true "fix" is to fuse all the cervical vertebra but neither of us are ready to go that route. I have a nerve stimulator implant but the pain overpowered it six months ago.

I'm not looking for any tx suggestions - unless you offer. More just personal info. My docs are baffled at the rapid degeneration happening in my spine and more specifically my neck. I've never been in a car accident, never broken or seriously hurt my back, never had a severe head injury, so I don't have a specific event I can point to in order to identify an origin of the problems. The only thing we can come up with is the severe abuse I suffered as a kid and maybe that had an effect of speeding up the aging process in my spine.

So what do you all think? Any one else have similar experience? Need more info from me???

Thanks all-
River

hel there I also have the same issues going on. I have something wrong with eevery disc
in my neck and lumbar spine . I was abussed as a child and if I turned away from a punch
in the mouth i received a punch in the back anywere his fists made contact with, I ask myself
what about boxers and fighters , they seem to fair well put then it was there choice to make
the contact with the fists of fury, I live my life in agoney dispite the pain meds that I have
the hydrocodone has stopped working and the doc wont give me anything stronger.
I am at the point were I trust no one and it appears to me that doctors will do what doctors
do and most times its what it is , a life in pain, are you on pain meds ? did you ever think
its the meds that are causing the pain , I have been on hydrocoone for 10 years and still
although it appears to give me little releif I take it only as orders and most times want to take the
whole bottle and take the dirt nap, I feel for you and everyone who suffers from living in pain
that is the fault of others, I need help and there is none for me . I am always in pain for every
thing I do , making love to my wife is one of the things I enjoy , the act leaves me in agony
as others but I still do it, work kills me as I do it daily returning home beat up again. the only
hope there seems to be is one day it will all be over .

Hi Riverwych, just found your post and read it with interest. I am 40 years old and was diagnosed with OA of the spine at 25. Like you I never had any reason for it except I too suffered severe physical abuse as a child and was always getting thrown against walls and my head repeatedly banged on walls/floors etc. I have been looking on the internet and there does appear to be a link with OA and child abuse. I wonder how many of us there are out there? Hope to hear from you, Leigh in London, UK.

Hi ohmyachingback, those boxers etc you mention aren't still growing though are they? We were children getting the crap kicked out of us, no wonder our spines are so damaged. The best I've felt was when I had Prednisolone (steroids, in case you have different drug names over there) but docs won't let you have them for long, so now it's just a daily consumption of Codeine/Paracetamol (Solpadol) which I'm sick of taking. Stopped functioning properly a while ago, work etc gone down the drain, I often feel as you do - be glad when it's all over, but then I think no, we've got to keep fighting haven't we? They've hurt us enough already. Leigh in London, UK
