I had a disc herniation at C5/C6. Two doctors advised me to have the surgery (I did it 1/1/10). In August, a third doctor had me scheduled for surgery but called the night before to cancel! He reviewed the latest MRI and the disc herniation had subsided a huge amount. I was able to avoid the surgery. It's been a LONG year. I did Egoscue on my own www.egoscue.com) early on and I've taken a lot of anti inflammatories.
The professional physical therapy has been the most helpful. WHat I thought was nerve pain was actually MUSCLE pain. The therapist grinded his knuckles into the knots in my back. It has been hugely helpful. I'd recommend seeing several doctors. IF you have to have the surgery, I know a number of people who have had it with great success. I wasn't worried about it because it is so much more non invasive than it used to be! Good luck!
Hi TrishF
I had fusion l-4, l-5, s-1 on March 31, 2009. If I had it to do over again, I would not do it. I still have pain. I also now have a lot of "new" issues. I am in constant pain. I have the original pain as well as new and different pain. This may sound odd, but I don't know of any other way to explain it. I am still on medication and will be for the rest of my life. Although I have not been able to enjoy a lot of things for a long time, there are even more now. Most days, I can't even put on my own shoes. I can't sit, stand, lay or anything for any long amount of time. True enough I do have both good and bad days, but mostly bad days. On the good days I tend to over do it and end up really suffering for it. I wish you luck.
