Continued chronic neck/throat swelling after ACDF (18 mos. post-op)

Started by MAC12215 on 08/11/2016 2:35pm

Hello. On 2/2/15 I had an anterior cervical discectomy, allograft, interbody fusion, segmental plate fixation at C5-C6 and C6-C7. Since the surgery, I have had chronic bouts of swelling behind my nose, the back of my throat interiorly as well as swelling exteriorly under my jaw line, chin and my throat area which reminds me of when I had the mumps as a child. This swelling has continued for 18 months post-op. All my follow-ups with the surgeon with the above complaint have been concluded that "it's a healing process". I do have fibromyalgia and a number of other medical conditions. With that said, has anyone else experienced this type of chronic swelling, post operatively? The swelling I have is intolerable at times and pushes my anxiety to the limit. It disables me to the point of tears. It feels like someone has their hands around my throat. The glands/lumps at both sides of my neck are palpable and can even been seen just by looking at my neck. This is my biggest complaint from the surgery. I had no choice but to have the surgery due to left sided weakness (arm, leg) and my spinal cord was compressed from herniated discs with spondylolistheses with dangerous consequences if I didn't have the surgery. I have been to every doctor you could think of (ENT's, head/neck specialists, rheumatologist, immunologist/allergist and the list goes on) for help or even an explanation. No one seems to know why I have this chronic swelling in my throat/neck. I would appreciate even one person that is or has experienced this troubling chronic throat swelling after ACDF surgery to talk to. Thank you for your attention to this post and regards to all recovering from this form of surgery. God speed...

The doctor that did your surgery, was he an orthopedic surgeon or neurosurgeon?

I would suggest to make an appointment with a good neurosurgeon for evaluation.

My husband has similiar intermittent swelling, difficulty swallowing and choaking sensation that no doctor has been able to explain ( 3+ years since acdf surgery) this is the first post I have seen describing anything close to what he deals with day in and day out.
