Failed fusion surgery?

Started by RMark on 05/15/2018 3:31pm

Hello, I'm new to this site. I had L1thru L5 fusion surgery in April of 17 and I'm still in bad pain no matter what I do. I had an mri in December which showed no problem with the exception of a narrowing between L5 and S1. My surgeon did not seem concerned? The decompression part of the surgery was pronounced a success but my leg pain and foot pain are as bad as they ever. I cannot stand, walk or sit for very long at all without an increase in already severe pain. I am a 60 year old man and now I must add ED to my list of ailments. My physical therapist and family doctor think this is a result of my surgery too. I have had 9 spinal injections either prior to or after surgery but have never received any relief at all from them. My physical therapist called a halt to my therapy when she realized that I seem to be getting worse. I'm sure that scar tissue would have shown up on my mri which was done at 8 months post surgery. What could be causing this continued pain? Any input would be truly appreciated. Thank you.

Did your surgeon tell you whether or not you fused? I had a failed fusion also and the surgeon I had told me that everything was fine when in fact it wasn't. The hardware had migrated and broke causing all of the pain. I would get a 2d opinion from another surgeon and if that surgeon doesn't explain if Ir's fused and what could be wrong go to another please. That is what I had to do.
