SEVERE thirst after spinal fusion

Started by Eileen D. Phillips on 03/12/2017 10:33am

I'm 3 months post op from a spinal fusion from L-4 toS-3. Why am I so thirsty all the time? I'm barely hanging on with this recovery pain but the thirst is driving me crazy! I drink fluids all day and have experienced nighttime incontinence. I have to keep water by my bed and I sip it all night. Between the compulsion to drink fluids all day and dealing with the urine all night I'm at my wits end!

Hi, Eileen,

I'm sorry you are having this issue of extreme thirst. Have you spoken to your primary care doctor about it? Your doctor may want to do some blood work, esp. blood glucose. Let us know how you're doing and what you discover.

Hi, Eileen--thanks for taking the time to post! We're curious: When did you first notice your extreme thirst? Was it immediately after surgery (or within a day or two) or is it a recent development?

Either way, this symptom warrants a call to your doctor because it's clearly having a negative impact on your quality of life. If your thirst developed immediately after surgery and you suspect it's related to your spine surgery, perhaps a call to your spine surgeon is the best first move. Or, if it developed later it may be connected to something else entirely, so you could see your personal doctor for more information.

We hope this helps! Let us know how you're doing--we wish you the very best of luck in finding relief.
