Minimally invasive discectomy and decompression Now and a fusion later

Started by Oreo on 03/17/2011 12:21am

My neurosurgeon is suggesting a l2-3 discectomy and l3-4 decompression. I have severe degenerative disc disease and he said these surgeries probably won,t help my low back pain. He doesn't want to do a fusion now, saying there is a 30percent chance I won't have to have a fusion. My second opinion said to definitely fuse in the same surgery, not waiting to see if I need it,because I will. What do you think about having the discectomy and decompression first and hoping I won't need a fusion the following year?Or do I go for it and do it all at the same time? Thanks for your help!
