My friend had a neck fusion c-5, c-6, c-7. They replaced the 2 disks with bone and a plate and screws to hold it. When we saw the surgeon for first time dr went thru all points and said do you have any questions. I said yes whats that little white line? Dr. Says oh a hairline crack but it should fuse as you heal. Now more than 12 months later that hairline crack has crumbled. He has little to no use and lots of pain in his hands and shoulders both sides. Is a broke disk normal after surgery?

He is in more pain now than he was before surgery. My friend has always been leary of drs but now he feels like they lie. This neurosurgeon did the procedure within 2 weeks of meeting my friend. Now that the replacement disk is crumbled dr said that he must quit smoking asap. There is no way he will fix the disk until he has zero nicotine in his system. The dr even gave him 2 nicotine blood tests. Now that he has quit for over 3 months the dr says it is an elective surgery. My friend just quit the last thing that he liked that he could still do. Due to his pain there is already no working, hunting, fishing and now smoking. Is there anyone out there with any advice? There is already a second opinion on the way. Has anyone else had this type of problem?

Really wish folks would do research into the success rat of these procedures before submitting to them . Your friend is one of the 33% who are left worse off when having any surgery on their spine which eventually has to be repeated as components shift or wear out. The next step is to find someone who both teaches and performs these surgeries for their opinion.

The replacement cadaver bone was cracked when they put it in or dr cracked it putting it in now its crumbled. What could happen if he doesnt get the second surgery? Can he become paralized? Can the "crumbs move or float into spinal cord or anywhere dangerous?
