2 days post acdf surgery/ freaking out

Started by monique2602 on 08/20/2018 12:45am

Hello all. I had ACDF surgery Friday morning c-4 through c-6. I've been having a lot of pain in the upper part of my back that I'm pretty sure is muscular and have been controlling it with pain meds. My throat though was sore when I woke up from surgery and is slowly getting worse. Tonight it feels like there is a big lump in my throat I'm trying to breathe and swallow around. Any advice for me. The throat thing is driving me crazy and getting worse, not better.

Hi, Monique2602 — I’m so sorry to hear abought your pain and throat discomfort after your fusion surgery. I had an ACDF is c5-c7 four years ago and remember those symptoms all too well. What helped me for the muscle spasms were 1) muscle relaxers that my surgeon ordered for me and 2) ice to reduce the pain. That should go away in a few weeks.

Ice can also be your friend to help with your throat! They have to move your muscles and esophagus aside to reach your spine for the fusion which results in a lot of soreness and inflammation. Try a bag of frozen peas, on 20 minutes, off 20 minutes for as often as you can. Throw the peas back in the freezer to use again - just mark it so you don’t try to cook them later!! The muscle relaxers may also help this. The worst of the discomfort in my throat went away in a few weeks, but I had some uncomfortable symptoms, esp. when I talked a lot for a few months. But it never hurts to call your doctors office if you are concerned! It won’t be the first time they’ve heard these issues.

The good news for me was that these post-op symptoms were no indication of how successful the surgery was! It does take quite a while to get back to normal, but I am so glad I had the cervical fusion!! I am totally pain free! Wishing you the same! Hang in there and let us know how you progress!
