Posterior thoracic 10-pelvis instrumented fusion and decompression

Started by Jean Crossland on 04/03/2017 3:01pm

I had this 15 hr. surgery two yrs. ago. Im 59 yrs old and don't even take an advil. I think you have to have a very educated surgeon My surgeon works at a teaching University Hospital My x-rays have two steel rods from T 10- to S-1 with huge screws all the way down This was my first operation . Then five mos. later he performed an anterior operation cutting from belly button to pelvic area so he could screw done the steel rods to my pelvic bones. Prior to this big operation I couldn't hardly walk,I was in horrible pain Literally Id crawl from bathroom to bed!

Hello, and thank you for posting! We'd love to hear more about your spine surgery recovery. How are you feeling 2 years postop?

Jean,
I'd be interested in hearing about your recovery. I had severe scoliosis and underwent spinal fusion in November 2015. It's been an extremely difficult recovery for me. I still have a lot of nerve damage and have developed a limp and experience severe cramping in my left leg which is now considerably weaker than my right leg. It's difficult for me to sit back on any hard surface without sufficient padding or a pillow due to some of the hardware protruding through my skin. I also have a difficult time getting comfortable enough to sleep through a full night. In addition, I have not yet been able to return to work as I'm not comfortable sitting or standing for long periods nor can I carry anything that's more than 20 lbs. I often regret having the surgery although it was necessary due to the rapid progression of my scoliosis. Any suggestions or information that may help my situation, even if it's just to know someone else has gotten through something similar would be appreciated.

I'm currently scheduled to have a fusion from T10 to S1/pelvis this coming Monday feb 26 2018. I would appreciate any suggestions you can make or an idea of how long your healing took?
