Help! Now what?

Started by hoskins93 on 05/18/2016 5:50am

I've had 3 lumbar fusion surgeries in 3 years. I had what I thought was a very good Neurosurgeon. After only getting worse, and not getting any relief my doctor did several myleograms and decided it would be best to remove the hardware from the L 3-4 . This was supposed to be a quick in and out surgery. Afterwards I found out he had completely opened me up removed both the L3-4 and the L 4-5 hardware and put all new hardware in the L 2-3. This was a long hard recovery ending up in even more pain, falling from the muscle spasms etc.. After several months he ordered a new myleogram . After words he came in and told me I was not fused! I asked him where and he said all of them! He said the material that they use for bone growth had been absorbed in different areas making it look like a lot of arthritis. He then tells me I need to quit smoking and be a year out before doing another surgery. (#5 back surgery is not much motivation to quit smoking!) I might also add that I cannot take any narcodicts due to bad reactions. So, I am pretty much disabled, with nothing for pain, the only thing I can take is flexeril which is little to no relief at all. When I called to schedule an appointment I was told, they know I need surgery but I haven't quit smoking so there's nothing they can do for me. Wouldn't he have noticed that I wasn't fused while he was in there removing hardware? I am miserable and unable to do even the most basic daily activities. I saw his PA a few months ago, and she said with my medical history she does not feel I am a good candidate for new bone growth. ( diabetic, vitamin D deficient, and now menopausal.) I really don't know where to turn or what to do. I am only 52, living in a 90 year old body. Any suggestions?
