Severe spinal stenosis

Started by lynnm on 10/18/2014 4:24pm

Hi,
My mother in law is 87 years young and is in good health except for severe spinal stenosis and a- fib. She has exhausted all the epidurals, shots, facet shots and even surgery. The worst is by her L4- L5 which is where her surgery was that lasted only 5 years, and now she is in such great pain that this active woman cannot do more than 20 steps before she needs to sit. She is on pain patches and vicodin 2 times a day. The spinal surgeon said he will not operate anymore . The pain management doctor just keeps changing her meds to no avail. Is there anything else left to try??? She just cries from the pain. Help!!!

I am a Gulf War & Somalia veteran who is suffering from Gulf War Illness. This spinal condition is definitely painful taking our quality of life at any age. At 44, my wife & I have decided to find the best doctors and surgical team to perform this surgery. There are 3 Mayo Hospitals and John Hopkins who lead the nation in healthcare issues when it comes to looking for a 2nd or final opinion. My Grandmother was special as you have shown by the words in your request for information. My wife Pene is a Chiropractor which has done Accupressure, Reiki, Reflexology while I have tried Spinal Decompression which was very helpful at Spinal Aid of Wausau. Accupuncture works if you have the right person for some relief as any of the Alternative Therapy Specialists mentioned above....there is only so much you can benefit, but it does make a difference. I found that listening to my body and making certain appts. on a schedule help keep me tuned up, but surgery is always a last resort and knowing her age most doctors won't recommend it. I will keep you in mind when I am in my research to seek the "Best Neurosurgeon" for all the right reasons. Opiates only mask and Oxycontin helps, but Morphine is dangerous and use Biofeedback after years of coping with various endeavors from military trauma, including cognitive. Watch the Research Advisory Committee and Gulf War Illness Research as they are spending millions to billions using cutting edge technology for chronic pain and issues from battlefield exposures. God is the best one to talk to, He listens and answers in mysterious ways, taking our mind off endeavors when dealing with serious pain or other healthcare issues.

Lynnm, I read your post, and was thinking about your Mother in law, and the patches that she is on.
Some or really most of the time people develope a tollerance to the pain medicine and it stops working as good as it did to start off with. If you have tried talking to her doctors and they wont do anymore surgery on her, and they wont change her meds to something else more effective or an alternate, imho you should try
finding a second opinion doctor/specialist that will listen and make sure to tell them she has a tollerance to the pain meds she is on and they dont work for her anymore.

Remember to explain everything you have mentioned in your post. I know its the most hardest thing to do is pray when you have an attack with so much pain, and thats the last thing I want to do whe I'm unable to manage my pian, but prayer does work! I'm not sure of you religion beliefs but I want to pray right now for your Mother...

Dear Lord, I come to you right now and ask for your divine healing and releaf from pain for this woman.
I pray that you send a fleet of angels to surround her and comfort her with your everlasting love, and a feeling of warmth healing rays wash over her as you releave her from her illness. Thank you Dear Lord Jesus, I believe you have control of everything in this world and I believe you have already began to work for this woman in annointing her with health and vibrance threw your grace! Amen! Lynnm, please keep us updated on her condition, and bless you for taking such good care of your Mother in law. Blessings for your family threw this Holiday season and protection be with. ")

Lynn m,

When all else fails, pray hard.

I too am praying for your mother-in-law for strength and relief.
And for you! Caregivers are very special people, may the good Lord anoint you also.

When I find that I am at the end of my rope, when I feel I can't go on. When my pain is so bad, I cry out and pray hard.

For God is the great physician. He is the great healer! Through him, Jesus Christ his son,, and with his grace, All Things are possible. Trust in him.

God Bless you both,
Str+

Lynn, your mother needs to find a pain manager if she does not have one. Pain from the lumbar spinal nerves can be excrutiating and when medications no longer work, have her explore a spinal stimulator with her pain manager. its installation is minor surgery but when working, the stimulator blocks the transmission of pain to the brain and instead supplies a tingling sensation. It may even be covered by Medicare if you are in the US.
