L4L5s1 fusion

Started by Dgeatches on 08/18/2013 3:11pm

Scheduled for surgery in a couple of weeks. I have been having issues for years but this time in set in jan and has not left. Apparently I fractured my back in my younger days, with herniated disc and nerve entrapment I feel like I take 1 step forward and 3 steps back. Have done the therapy and the meds repeatedly. Just want some relief and some advice

Hey,

All I can say is just take your time for your recovery - I had a fusion in 2011, and a second in 2013 (I'm still in the recovery process of this one) and have family/friends round for support because you'll need it. You'll have high days and low days and days where the people close to you are gonna take a beating - so warn them, but give it time and things get better and don't be afraid to use painkillers if you need them after the surgery. Also, my best friend came in the shape of a grabber! Get one, handy as hell! If there's anything you wanna know, just ask :)

Hey there, I understand where you are at in life right now! Looking for answers and relief of your pain and sometimes we will make what seems to be the only choice we have at that moment to finally be out of pain and back to a normal life, but wait one moment please!! You are the only person that cares about YOU so I'm just saying to do your research and do ALOT of it before you make a choice because most cases, a simple choice makes life worse is so many ways and for lots of us we are wondering if its worth even living anymore due to the pain caused by surgeries that once done you can't go back and you can't get drs to listen to you about how bad it hurts after surgery!! Please have the drs test to see if your body will reject metals and other things they will put in you, also make sure you can handle more pain then what you are dealing with right now because there is a chance you will have to deal with more after the surgery! I'll pray for you and hope things work out for the best and you recover fast with little pain! Keep us informed of your progress and how your handling things remember we are all here for eachother best wishes

hello,

I just recently had the fusion surgery done on my l4l5s1. I am in my 7th week of recovery and I have mixed feelings right now. I definitely agree that you should do all the research with your doctor before the surgery as to what to expect after the surgery. I had a number of problems that happened that were never discussed with me prior to surgery. some of the things where my bows would not work right for 3 or 4 days due to the fact they must handle them to get to your herniated disc. second I lost taste and smell for about 8 days due to all the drugs they give you to be put under. also I experienced severe nerve pain in buttocks and legs for the first several months. its very weird thou, before the surgery I was having the nerve pain in my left buttock and left leg, but now post surgery my left sid feels totally good and now my right side is hurting (go figure!) it only hurts when I sit or lay down, walking is relief. my doctor says x-rays look good and are confident that the nerve pain will just go away with more time and exercise. they have me on lyrica and also tried the Elavil for the nerve pain but doesn't seem to help. the only thing to take the edge off is the oxycodone and the oxytocin's.

hope your surgery goes well! we just need to stay positive if you can....

Hello I am now 2 months post op from a L4 L5 S1 fusion and the pain that I had before is now worse my hip almost feels like glass inside when I walk or weight bare. How long before I feel better? Or will I ever I am depressed because as of right now I am worse off. Can't hardly walk sit or stand I couldn't before but I could take small walks before now it hurts just going room to room. I make my self walk because I am suppose to. I go the 15 th to see dr to see if the fusion took. Please tell me someone can tell me there is light at the end of the tunnel.

I'm sure this person has had surgery by now and I hope it worked! I had a fusion in 75 for scoliosis and was fused T4/L2. recovered and was fine until92 when I woke with a pain in my foot that later wormed it's way up my leg and into my buttock and lower back. After many doc's and treatment I had dic's surgery. It was a failure and made the pain worse. The doc said he was sorry and didn't want to see me anymore and sent me to a pain doc. May years later and many treatments and drugs, I find myself on methadone and Lyrica and am slowly bending towards the floor. I am now spinal bone to bone and have lost most of my remaining 4 dic's. Tired of pain and I have given up on trying to fix it. I do what I can do and try to enjoy life knowing that out in the big world there are people worse off than myself. Oh, by the way, disability checks barely give a person enough to live on and it's not fun staying home all day in pain. (I was once told how lucky I was to not have to work and to get a check every month!!!)
