Pain between the shoulder blades?

Started by ontheotherhand on 10/04/2012 1:09pm

Hi,
My name's Janet, used to go by upanddown on this site.
Here's a brief history:
2007, A.L.I.F.of L4-S1. I still have pain in the lumbar and sciatica, but it's tolerable when medicated. (Most of the time and only if I don't over do it). So I'm glad I had the surgery.

Sept. 2012, A.C.D.F., of C6-7. Pain in left arm is gone but the pain between the shoulder blades is still bad.
I have no idea what is causing this. I hoped the surgery would have helped this along with the arm pain but it doesn't appear so. Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

Do you find this discussion helpful?

Hi Janet,,,Aug.5th was when I had my C4-5 done, Im going to physical therapy 3x week for same complaint,,at times it feels like the Rod is going to bust through my skin. What we are experiencing are the muscles repairing themselves and from the chronic pain we tense up and the muscles being hard as rocks. We compensate by using these muscles to keep our heads up from the surgeries,Our surgeries R still too new and we havnt healed yet. The only releif I get is from a good neck rub,but unfortunatly I dont have a live in massage therapist..lol... Rene :)

Rene,
Yeah go ahead and send me the bill...I'll write you a check. :D
I'm In Kansas and no p.t. yet. The thing is, I went through p.t. 3 times for the pain between the shoulder blades and it just got worse. After the 3rd round of p.t. the pain went into my arm and that's when they did the surgery. I'm getting a bit depressed because I've developed a similar pain down the same arm after very little use.
By the way, I've lost almost all r.o.m. bending my head to the side (ear toward shoulder), both bending to the left and right. Is this normal? I was told there would be minimal loss of r.o.m.
My surgery was Sept.14th.
Thanks again Rene,
Janet

Hi Janet,,about the ROM issue, I can go left to right but not up,,It can B a muscle issue till it repairs for U. I will never be able to look up D/T the top of my spine curving the wrong way,,They told me it was something I must have been born with,,I researched it, and from what docs say it was during development of spine as a fetus,,something to do with oxygen loss in uteroe. My mother had issues with carying when pregnant. My two older brothers both have cerebral palsy, I dont have CP, but it seems to have affected me in my spine..eh,,it is what it is I guess,my one brother made a funny by sayin U got away w/it for 45yrs now ur just like us.I grew up in a house where we all have a Big sence of humor,...so my ROM is affected from that...But in your case, keep those muscles loose,U dont have to go to PT, just continue w/ light ROM excersises to the neck, heating pads, or those muscle rubs that heat up, eg:Biofreeze..When I stated I go to PT it consists of LIGHT massage, not manipulation or deep Rub,accupuncture,N heat wraps. This facility has it all so I start in one room n move to three others sort of like an assembly line. I tryed the typical PT but all that did was kill me. So I found this chiropractic office that offers all those services. If U get a script for PT ur insurance should cover it. Everyone thinks PT just consists of what we R familiar with as going to a physical therapy facility, But massage is a form of PT,,,who doesnt love a good massage,,so look into it, they R found in chiropractic offices,,If U go to a typical Day Spa the insurance wont cover it. inbetween my visits I tryed havn Hubby do a light rub but all he did was give me Rub burn and its like pullin teeth as if im askin for him to build me a house,,,MEN,,just want to stabb them sometimes,,LOL. U enjoy ur night, will chat again,,Rene

Rene,
Lol @ you're "men" comment, it's like they all went to the same school or something!
The last p.t. sessions I had were deep tissue release. It felt soooooo good while the therapist was doing it, but I was in agony by the time I got home. This went on for a few weeks and I never did get any relief. I'm a believer in p.t.. Having said that, I also believe, when it works it works and when it doesn't it doesn't.
It's good that your brothers sort of understand your spinal issues and it does help having a sense of humor. I read some of your other posts and you mentioned the pain was worse when you were on your own. Isn't that the truth! I know it is for me too. I think we should all get scripts for a comedy show!
I broke down today and put a Butrans patch on. I have to take so much Lortab I'm like a zombie most days and still it doesn't do a whole lot, other than give me brain fog.
I hope I haven't done anything to hinder or ruin the fusion. 10 days post op. the Dr' told me my ristrictions were...don't lift more that 30 pounds and don't do anything that hurts. Well, you don't know it's gonna hurt till it happens duh! I guess he figures with the plate secured with screws not much can go wrong, maybe the bone fusing isn't necessary, who knows.
He also said that my lumbar fusion was the strongest part of my spine, and while this is true, he didn't mention that above and below the fusion was now essentially weaker. I hate it when Dr.s don't tell the whole truth. It makes it hard to trust them, and the fact that we're at their mercy doesn't help.
Enough of me moaning,
Keep postin',
Janet

Hi Janet,,,I need to vent so this time im coming to u for advice,Im so mentally beaten down I cant compose myself. Ill try to make it as short as possible to give U an idea of what im trying to express,,you will need to sit 4 this story. #1. since my lumbar surgery last year,, I had a great pain mngmt doc in Southampton who was managing my pain correctly w/ 2 narcs and a muscle relaxer, I was paying cash bcause he didnt accept my insurance but i didnt care about the cost bcause I was receiving the correct form of Pain Management . # 2 .I switched to a new doc bcause In Aug when I had the cervical surgery, I decided to start w/pain management who was part of the surgeons team N I thought it would B best to switch bcause he can communicate w/surgeon and I prefer to stick w/one group as a whole. He told me to discontinue my Psych meds (cymbalta) bcause to many meds were the reason why I was getting depressed (WRONG), but I listened anyway,,My 1st visit he scripted me for percacets 5 tabs a day N nothing else.then in Septembers visit he cut me bak to 4 a day and he would cut bak again on Oct 14ths appointment.. I cant function on 4 tabs daily and the thought of cutting bak again on 14th and still no relaxers and no cymbalta, NO WAY IN HELL., Which brings me to 2day, why I consulted w/ this new one whom is affiliated w/ the PT group I told u about, Again I thought it best to stick w/ one group,,WELL,I went in prepaired w/ all reports, MRI discs and my history,He actually told me I dont need to see them bcause he was going by what PT wrote in my chart N the xray that PT performed in their office . So he proceeds to give me pinpoint Lidocain injections and a script for 1 tab daily of percs N to dispence 30 tabs.As I was driving home the pain hightened n the more I thought about it (one tab a day) I turned around went bak in office gave them their script back n I said I want my contract null n voided bcause thats not Pain management. The doc pulled me in exam room bcause he said everyone in waiting room dosnt need to hear this,he then said u missunderstood me,, the script was for 1 wk till my next appointment for the 2nd trigger point injections and he would give me another script, Thats when I lost it, I told him Im a nurse (which I usually dont disclose to docs) and told him that if its for a week of meds u wrote script wrong bcause the script says not to exceed one tab daily N to dispence 30 tabs which calculates to a month N if ur intensions of it being for a week and u were going to give me another next week it couldnt B filled bcause of the way U wrote it (1 a day at a total of 30 = 30 days) DUH,,Well he looked like a deer in headlights, so he re-wrote another script reitterating its for a week supply Rene N when u come bak next week you will get another script. Now the new script states 1 tab 2x daily N to dispence 20,so he f---d me again bcause that calculates to 10 days,,, and again , if I was to get another script next Tues It cannot B filled.,,( boy does he hate me now),I am so frustrated N dissapointed AGAIN about the games they play w/us,,N yet we have the documentation that the meds are warrented for our conditions of chronic Pain N surgeries,,N yet I read of those getting the proper meds, why cant I seem to find that honest caring doctor,,He also stated once I receive ur medical files from your preveous doctors he will prescribe the correct dosages N amounts..God help him, for when I go in next Tues. B4 he even touches me im gonna ask to see that he did obtain my records,If the records R not in my chart Im going to flip on him and cause a scene (n not in exam room,,in the waiting room).Does he take me for a fool,,and he actually started to sweat and stutter when I told him im an Orthopedic nurse and THATS not Pain manegement, and that he wrote BOTH scripts wrong,.( boy does he hate me) So now Im bak to square one,,again . WHY ME? ,,, thanx 4 listening...Rene :)

Rene, I have friends here in Syracuse that get 325/7.5 hydros 150 a month from their GP. Go to your GP tell him or her what`s up. You know the meds I get and need. I`m truly sorry that you have so much trouble where you live. I also have friends outside of NYC that gets 240 Narcos a month from GP.Their not as good but they work like the percset. Better Luck

Rene,
I don't go to any pain management, I just use my pcp and she had been great in getting me what I need to get pain relief. Have you tried your family Dr.? I haven't had to sign any "contracts" either. ( That alone is insulting. Do they make diabetics sign insulin contracts.) Anyway, this is whats worked for me, I may be in your shoes soon as my Dr. just moved to urgent care and doesn't accept my insurance.
I never thought to look at the prescriptions, I certainly will from now on though.
I hope you can get this sorted out soon and get some relief.
I hate this for you, keep us up to date,
Janet

Hi Janet,,I hope u dont have to go through it either cause it sucks and is embarrissing. A friend of mine in NC told me their are online pain management docs that u send ur records and photo drivers licence n they consult u on phone n obtain ur records ,,,its not the illegal overseas stuff on the internet,,I would never trust that. These are all in the states so 2morro thats my mission to make some calls to these clinics and see how it works. Ill let u know how I make out, if allelse fails Im gonna have to go to Montauk, an hour away,A friend of mine works their and she said she spoke w/doc n for me to come in..But I dont want to have to travel so far every month, but if I have no choice I guess I will. I kind of like the sound of these homee service that these clinics offer, one is in texas and I found another in Florida,we shall see. Thanx for the listening ear,,Rene :)

Ok, I really am sick to death of this pain between the shoulder blades. Anytime I bend my head forward and or use my arms. I'm ready to hire an ice-pick man to stab me in the upper back just to get some relief!
There must be another reason (other than muscular), which cause this.
Please, anyone who has suffered with this in spite of P.T. and surgery and has an answer, clue me in....please,
Janet

Hi Janet, That pain between ur shoulder blades just wont leave U alone,,am glad to hear ur tryin to manage the pain w/ ur butrans patch,,,does it help? R U going to PT? if so that would aggrevate it.When was ur last MRI,,Or xray? If U havnt had one in a while ask ur surgeon,PM, Or PT to script U for one. I have titanium rod, fusion, plate n screws.and a disc spacer in my cervial level4&5,,so I understanrd ur discomfort, I cant flew my head up, that causes me to have same feeling.I have 2 MRIs scheduled for this week so ill keep u posted how it goes. Im finding it very hard to find a PM doc, everytime I consult w/one first the call my surgeon, and the stupid ideot keeps telling PM theres nothing wrong w/me and not to scribe me pain meds,,Im getting so frustrated.so now I have to suffer till after MRIs and maybe then PM will consider helping me and overide what the surgeon keeps telling them. I guess Ill find out. Rene :(

Hi all,
It's official, between the lumbar fusion and the c-pine fusion, I'm an inch taller! (How many people actually get taller as they age?) That's on the "up" side. Really, I would have preferred longer legs or something, not a longer body and neck! I'll be hunting for jeans with short legs and long waist. (pajama jeans are looking good to me.)

Hope everyone is having a decent week.
Rene, you've been quiet, hope you're ok,
Janet :)

I could SCREAM!!!
I just want one day, a moment even, when I don't feel like this. SOMETHING, ANYTHING!
I know being distracted would help, but I don't know what it would take to get my mind off this.
More meds for me today, I hate doing this...two steps forward eight steps back, hell, I bump into myself.
:( Janet

Rene,'
Haven't seen you post in a while, hope you're o.k. Did you have any luck finding new P.M.? What did the M.R.I. show? Have you been swept away by the storm out there on the E. Coast?
Thinking about you,
Janet

Hi Janet, Ive missed U guys too, I had a bad month, im sure u read it on my blog,,,I too was complaining of burning n stabbing inbetween shoulder blades 2 weeks ago they finally did MRI of thoracic to find I have a hemangioma at T5/L1,L2 & 3 herniation, multiple thoracic bulges and I dont have one disc left in lumbar,,the contribute that to what I was complaining of,,and im deff. not going back to that idiot surgeon...Have u had a thoracic MRI,,if not push for one, they usually dont do thoracic cause its rare issues happen in that regeon,,I guess Im the oddball that does..as far as the meds, eat away if it gets the pain down,,my therory I want to be comfortable,,good news I was approved for disability today..Whats been goin on ,,on your end? I had my c6-7 fused 2 years ago and still have left arm
Muscle pain issues and the between the shoulder blades pain. I think I've found the culprit though- I wore one of my old fancy bras a few weeks ago and thought I was going to die.

I am big breasted and I've always said it was a pinched nerve in my left shoulder - after surgery for a bulged disc - the "guy" doctor couldn't explain why I wasn't back to normal.
I believe there is a link between bra straps and this.

The best thing I can come up with is a wide strap, proper fitting bra and a good deep tissue massage therapist- I go every other week- it's cheaper than my insurance co- pay for PT

I did have a thoracic MRI and there it was, 5 herniated discs from T.4 down, the worst being T.5-6. The pain starts in between the shoulder blades and wraps around my rib cage.
I talked to my surgeon and there's no way he's touching that area of my spine. He said it wouldn't make things better, and more than likely, much worse. So it looks like pain is going to be with me for...well, the rest of my life.
My prognosis: (Best case scenario.) Worsening pain. There's nothing I can do about it, so I better learn to live with it. (I'm NOT going to embrace it though.)
Anyway, if you have pain between the shoulder blades, and if there's any pain radiating to the rib cage or abdomen, get an MRI of the T-spine.
