L-5 S-1 Discectomy Failed Back Syndrome

Started by Randy W on 09/15/2012 4:49pm

Hello, I'm new to this community. I'm a 53 year old male, a little overweight, life long athelete. I have had 2 cervial fusions dues to pretty brutal ruptures. The procedures eliminated my shoulder and arm pain. AND THEN IT GOT INTERESTING. I was found to have herniated discs at L-5, S-1. Neither injections for PT helped. So I followed 2 surgeons' advice and opted to go for the discectomy. Post op my pain level doubled. I'm only 2 weeks out and my surgeon says the only thing I can do is take the pain management route. Obviously I'm angry and scared. (I have two young children.) I'm still on the pain med and can barely get around on crutches. I'm worried about my career and potential future surgeries.

My question is this: should I wait a couple of months, get another MRI and proceed from there? Could a second surgery help?

Randy 2 weeks out after most surgeries you can`t tell if it help yet. Give it 4 months than worry. I had one surgery that worked after a day. Most take months and a lot of rehab. I did have a lot done to me over the years. A fusion L3-4 in 2010. Still in pain but different. Sam

Look into it..Keep me informed on what u decide, have u tried the injections? I didnt have much luck w them but im tryn again on Tues,,,I just keep PLEADING with them I want to b comfortable and have some quality of life,,and its such a struggle to get those scripts from .....some not all pain mngmt ,,treat us like were addicts,,awful feeling isnt it? very degrating, embarissing,,,but I just want to b able to SMILE and have some of this pain releived,,I know it doesnt go away, just want it bearable.. hope u can find my other blog, I moved it above my other one...Have A PAIN FREE day,(I hope),,will chat again,,RENE :)

Randy we are all over the us and canada on here. I had a open back fusion done by a great doc in Syracuse. If I had to do it again now there`s better ways.I found a another doc in NJ(NYC) that has fix the big nerve problems. At home just more pills where I can`t think. What I was trying to say make sure you find the best doctor in a big city. Sam

How ya doin Randy? havn some good days yet,,in time you will find your a walking barometer, youll b able to tell if weather man is going to b right,,haha.....Sams right, The big apple is only 40min 4 me, I was contemplatintg the surgeries there but the going bak n forth for my family would hav been much, I did have a consult w one in city, it cost me 950.00, he is surgeon the worked on international and the prof. hockey players,,know wonder consult was so expensive, he was an Park ave and 5th,, A big foo foo area,,too rich for my blood, ive been havn a bad week, trying to stay smilin, so I sign on now n then. But most of all its my kids I do it for, their 25 and 22 yrs old both nurses. Cant get them off the payroll though, tryin to get them married but todays generation wont budge,,why should they? lifes good daddy pays 4 everything..Do u have kids? just wanted to check in, hope your doin well. bye ..Rene :)

Mornin Randy, I saw on someone elses site u asked me about Gabapenton/Neurontin, I tried it a while back for a month, unfortunatly it didnt work for me except for making me swell up like a balloon w water..Some it works for, Gabapentin is not a fast acting med, it takes 2-3 wks to hit the theraputic level, so u have to give it a chance unless you get side effects like I did. I too cant move without pain meds, I couldnt imagine them being taken from me n having to cope with the pain,,even though the meds JUST take the edge off the pain for a short period of time..What meds do they have you on? How are you doing so far? havnt heard from you.. Im sure by now youve had your first follow up visit w/your surgeon,,Usually the do an MRI a month or so after surgery to see whats goin on..Keep me informed,,Try to smile in front of your children, I know its hard but do it 4 them,,The only thing that keeps me going are my girls,,Both r planning to marry within the next two years, And I so desperatly want to physically be able to b a part of all the preperation and DRESS shopping, as its every MOMs Dream. And if it takes me eating the meds like skittles just to partake,,I will..I PLEAD to PAIN MNGMNT to just keep me comfortable and put the smile back on my face,,but its always a battle,,There always cutting me back or telling me its all in my head to go see a shrink,,which I hav been for 2 yrs now..These docs should walk in our shoes for a couple of days and maybe they would be more compassionate n understanding to what we r feeling..Its our bodies n our choice, we know the risks of the narcotics,,but do we have a choice? NO,,,,Hope your doing better, keep us informed,,,Rene:)

Hi Randy!
I too am from Metro Atlanta. My first fusion was done at St Joseph's on the Northside, this was done in 2009. I too am two weeks out of having surgery to correct the initial fusion. I am hoping that your surgery wasn't done by the same group that did mine. At any rate, do give it some time, but ya know, as soon as a woke up from the first surgery, I knew that it was wrong... I went to Macon for my latest surgery and am so thankful! Good Luck!

Mornin Randy, how r u feeling? Havnt heard from u. Now that the weather is changing , this season should b interesting 4 us all. Read what u said to Barb,,she a nice woman, I def. can relate to what u said about the docs, they dont give a s____t about us, how we r pleading for help n they tell us its in our head bcause the MRIs show everything is fine but we get diagnosed w Failed Back Syndrome, and they still wont treat us correctly, and when they push me to the point I speak up ( which they hate)bcause they know Im right, they leave the room n send in a nurse,n never return, they leave it up to the nurse to giv me his instructions to just sched. my next monthly apt.I buck heads constantly with them,Ive been trying for the past 3 days to speak w him ,n I get nowhere, they put me on hold n come back saying either hes w a patient, they will give him the message, n I never get a call back, Im at my witts end, what happened to the OATH they took, to do no harm,,,,,,,thats a joke, instead they leave us like dogs suffering,,,Did u know by law, that its considered a form of torture. They can b sued, because we r not being treated correctly w pain management meds, Hope ur doing well, keep us informed...RENE :)
