If gone untreated can the individual end up in a wheel chair ?

I diagnosed with scoliosis at 15. I am now 51 and no wheel chair in sight. I had a 49% curvature. You didn't say the specifics of your condition, so I hesitate to comment futher.

I tolerated pain from scoliosis for a couple of years. It was to the point that I had to sit up to sleep, it was very painful to walk and stand. Basically I was miserable all of the time. I had extensive surgery with rods and screws places from T7 to S1 and while I am still in the recovery stage I am not sorry I did it. At 51 was okay with no problems. It only took a year for mine to get as bad as it did.
