STENOSIS, DUE TO DISC BULGES

Started by LISTENER on 11/03/2010 1:58am

HI, JUST HAD MY SECOND SERIERS OF LUMBAR EPIDERAL SHOTS FOR MY STENOSIS, DUE TO MULTIPLE DISC BULGES, SOME LARGE, SOME SMALL. YOUR ONLY ALLOWED 3 SERIES, OF 2 SHOTS EACH YEAR, ABOUT 2 1/2 TO 3 MONTHS IN BETWEEN OR MORE IF YOUR DOING GOOD WITH THE PREVIOUS SHOTS OR INJECTIONS.
AT LEAST I CAN GET OUT OF BED EASILY, COULDN'T EVEN DO THAT BEFORE, IT WAS LIKE I WAS 120 YEARS OLD BEFORE THE FIRSM EPIDERAL BLOCK INJECTIONS. I HAVE TO SAY, MY LEGS PAIN STARTED TO COME BACK, AFTER 2 1/2 WEEKS, WHICH WAS DISAPPOINTING, AND THE PAIN IN BOTH LEGS ONLY IN THE BACK OF THEM BUT FROM ANKLE ALL THE WAY UP, LIKE BEFORE ANY TREATMENTS, JUST NOT QUITE AS CHRONIC, THANK GOODNESS. SO I WAITED THE SEVERAL WEEKS, 3 MONTHS TO BE EXACT, AND WENT FOR MY SECOND SERIES OF 2 SHOTS, IN A LOWER PLACE THIS TIME, LUMBAR EPIDERAL AREA L5.
HOPE IT HELPS MORE, ITS BEEN 1 WEEK TODAY, AND I HAVE SLIGHT PAIN IN THE BACKS OF EITHER LEGS SOMETIMES. OF COURSE, EVEN THOUGH YOU HAVE TO BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU DO, I STILL DO GROCERIES, OF COURSE, WHICH IS HEAVY, AND TAKE OUT THE GARBAGE WHICH IS USUALLY HEAVY, SUPPOSE TO BE FINISHING RENEVATING APARTMENT, BUT LETS FACE IT, IT WILL HAVE TO BE GOING SLOWER NOW, FOR A WHILE, AND I WILL ALWAYS HAVE TO BE MORE CAREFUL ABOUT PUTTING TOO MUCH STRESS, ON MY LOWER SPINE.
I OCCASIONALLY TAKE AN ACETEMETAPHINE 500 MG, BUT IT DOES VERY LITTLE, MOST TIMES, CAN'T TAKE ANY CODENE, MAKES ME NAUSEATED, AND THE STRONGER MEDS, WHICH HAVE VERY BAD SIDE EFFECTS IS COMPLETELY OUT, NOT FOR ME. I ALREADY TAKE IMITREX 100MG FOR CHRONIC MIGRANES WHICH TOOK ME YEARS TO FINALLY TAKE BECAUSE I WAS DISGUSTED WHEN I READ ALL THE POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS, BUT LETS FACE IT, WHEN YOU SUFFERED ENOUGH UNIMAGEABLE MIGRANE PAIN, YOU DO EVENTUALLY TRY IT, AND IT SAVED MY LIFE, WHICH I HAD VERY LITTLE OF WITHE THE CHRONIC MIGRANES MOST OF MY ADULT LIFE, STILL DON'T KNOW HOW I COPED WITH IT WITHOUT THE IMITREX, WHEN I THINK ABOUT IT.
BUT I DOUBT IF I WILL TAKE ANYTHING STRONG FOR MY STENOSIS, RIGHT NOW, ANYWAY, WOULD LIKE TO HEAR WHAT OTHERS TAKE AND THERE SUCCESS WITH SPECIFIC MEDS FOR THEIR STENOSIS AND HOW IT HELPS THEM.
I ALSO WANT TO KNOW IF RIDING A BIKE HARMS THIS CONDITION MORE, IF ANYONE HAS ANY KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THIS,, SPINE DOCTOR JUST SAID NOT FOR QUITE A WHILE, THAT WAS IT, AND I KNOW THAT. BUT I ALSO KNOW THE ONLY RELIEF I HAD GOTTEN, CAUSE WALKING WAS KILLER, WAS WHEN I RODE MY BIKE, THE PRESSURE AND PAIN WAS ALMOST COMPLETELY RELIEVED, HOWEVER WITHIN SECONDS OF GETTING OFF THE BIKE AND WALKING AGAIN, ALL THE PAIN STARTED UP ONCE AGAIN, BEFORE AND EVEN AFTER THE FIRST SERIES OF EPIDERAL SHOTS.
ANY INFO ON MEDS, EXERCISE, WHAT YOUR SPINE SPECIALIST SAID, SWIMMING, JUST ANY THING YOU WOULD LIKE TO SAY OR SHARE, PLEASE LET ME KNOW, VERY INTERESTED. BY THE WAY I AM IN MY 50s JUST A FACT, IN CASE YOU WANT TO KNOW.. THANKS, HOPE TO HEAR FROM YOU...

Hi

I am in my fifties and for the past four months have really suffered with back and leg pain. Walking is difficult and when i had the results of my mri it showed disc bulge at L5/S1 with disc degfeneration at the three other discs above. Did your mri actually say that you had stenosis as right now i am wondering whether to have an appt with orthopaedics. On my mri it showed no stenosis.

Listner,

This past July I started feeling symptoms of lower back pain. Finally while golfing (which I do for a living) I just fell to the grass. I went to the doctor who requested an mri right away, The results showed severe spinal stenosis, syphohidilis, degenrative disc disease, a bulged l3-l4, herniated l4-l5 and bulged l5-s1. I was refered to a spinal surgeon who right away recomended a microdiscetomy. I was going to seek a second opinion but talked to my father ho has undergone fusions, lamectomies, etc. My surgery was on Monday 11-1-10, today is Friday and I have all the feeling back in my right leg and hip, the pain in my back is gone. I can move around, other than the actual surgicial zone which is only 2 inches I feel wonderful.

Basically my surgery was an hour and a half in which I chose to take the epidural and sedation. It was an outpatient precedure which began at 9 am, I was home by 2 pm. I dressed myself and walked out the same day, I have only had one bad night and that was the first night. I have already stopped taking pain meds and have begun walking and streching. I can resume working in one week and again feel great. I would talk to your docor and see if a microdiscectomy is an option.

The microdiscectomy (spelling sorry) is a 2 inch incision in which the surgeon goes in and removes the herniated or bulged section. All stiches are left inside your body and they just tape your back closed. They only did my l4-l5 and said that should relive the pressure off my nerves, etc which in did. 100% turn around already. The doc also believes that it will correct my bulges. I am only 24 years old with a very long torso. The only bad news in this is that my surgeon thinks he may see me again for different issues bc of my age and the stress I put on my back daily golfing. /id be interested to see what your docs tell you.

Good Luck with everything. I know its scary but im sure your in good hands. I know I was.
