herniated disc

Started by cctwiggy on 10/04/2010 5:27pm

I am a 56 yrs female who works a job that requires me to be able to lift 1000 dollars worth of quarters and dimes every few minutes all day long. I work in a money room for a Tollway system. Three years into the job I had a serious fall flat on my back while securing bags of money on a skid for pick. The procedure required me to walk backwards were I fell backwards over a bag of coins. After X-Rays, Physical Therapy, work hardining, anti inflammatory was all that was prescribed. Moving forward, I've substained another injury picking up money. Herniated disc, annular tear and inpingment, Dr. wants to do a fusion. Are there any other procedures that can be done instead.

You probably should have an MRI to see exactly whats going on. A minimally invasive microdiscectomy
is a very common surgery for a simple herniation. If its fragmented you may not need surgery at all? A fusion sounds a bit aggressive ?

I had a fusion July 22 . I don`t know if Icould ever pick up anything that weights over 15 lbs again. Remember there is along time before you can do anything again. I would never of had a fusion if I new how long the recovery was going to be. Massive pain from this surgery. A lot worse then presurgery. Good Luck Sam

Sam, what kind of fusion did you have? did they go in thru the front or back? was it an open surgery or a minimally invasive such as a TLIF or PLIF? thanks, jkoko
