how to protect your back while lying on it for hours during surgery

Started by cll on 01/16/2011 10:40am

I have an upcoming pelvic surgery and I am very concerned about being flat on my back for the 1- 3 hours that the surgery will last, plus whatever time I will be in recovery. Currently I can't lie on my back for more than a few hours, at most, without numbness in my legs from a bulging lumbar disk. The sensation of numbness wakes me up multiple times a night but once I shift position it recedes. The few times I didn't wake and shift, the numbness took many hours to go away. Anyone have a suggestion I can pass on to my surgeon about body position?
