Horseback riding after surgery

Started by Ndpatters55 on 01/08/2019 7:35pm

Any riders out there? If i have a spinal fusion for Pars Defect, will I be able to ride again? Healing time? If I can’t ride we may have a deal breaker. But I’m in so much pain I can’t ride much now.

Hey,
I’m a lifelong rider too. I’m on my second back surgery - just completed 10 days ago L2-S2 Fusion. My surgeon says I can ride again after bone graft grows which could be 9-12months. His concern is not doing anything to pound on the new bone growth - jumping, cross country courses, endurance riding, or training younguns that might want to dump me. He’s not worried about trail rides or showing in flat classes. My pain was so bad I had already limited the type or riding I was doing. I’ll gladly give up the competitiveness and speed to keep riding casually with no pain.

I have had other surgeons in the past tell me to just quit, but that becomes a quality of life debate!

Good Luck with your decision, let me know if I can help more.
