Failed Spinal Fusion Surgery.

Started by carynfio on 09/18/2017 8:37am

I had a spinal fusion on L4-L5 in 2011, It has completely failed and my back pain has been worse than before the surgery. I have gone back to my surgeon and he said there is nothing else he can do for me and wen t to maybe two more and they don't want to touch me. I can't stand or walk for long periods of time. I am in constant pain and I still work full time. I would love if anyone has any advice for me! Thank you.

Hello
I understand the point where you are coming from. I have had about 12 major surgeries, most at the top five hospitals and with the top orthopedists & neurosurgeons in the country. Yes, they were good, but nobody is God. I am now fused from C3-6 and T2-S1. If I could go back & change things, I DEFINITELY would!
This is my advice to you:
1. Educate yourself on EVERYTHING: from your doctors to your procedures, diagnoses, tests. Get copies of everything because you might need it in the future.
2.Research: the top hospitals, the doctors, the medical boards (for any malpractice suits), all options available to you.
3. Communicate: once you have decided what path is best for you, talk to anyone who has gone through that procedure first hand. A doctor can explain things from a textbook or a lecture, but nobody can explain it better than someone who has actually experienced it.
4. Support: Make sure you have a good support system around you, whether it be family, friends, or a support group. You can lean on them when times get difficult & that's very important.
If I can be of any further help, please let me know. Just know that you will be in my thoughts & prayers.

Hello, carynfio--thank you for your post. We are very sorry to read about your failed back surgery and your struggle finding appropriate follow-up care.

We'd like to share the following article with you, which we believe addresses a similar situation to yours:

It's unfortunate that the other physicians you've seen haven't been able to offer help. That shouldn't stop you from seeking out other medical opinions, and we encourage you to continue seeing other spine specialists to explore how to address your pain.
