Started by LB on 04/29/2016 10:41pm

Hi all, does anyone have s sucess story regarding a L5, S1 fusion? I have DDD. My disk is gone and I have bone on bone. Pain, falling over. Lower back and leg pain. I have heard stories about it and some people say do t do it. I don't have much of a life now. But if it got worst, I couldn't take it. Any advice. I would really appreciate it. Thanks I advance for your time!

Hi,LB,
I had spinal fusion or mis tlif done on L5 S1. I had the same symptoms that finally got to the point that I was unable to do my job our much of anything without horrible pain. I had my surgery done March 1st of this year, the pain after the surgery was really bad, but they control it for you in the hospital and I was up out of the bed that evening after surgery. I immediately felt the pain in my legs had disappeared. The first 2 weeks to a month were the hardest for me because of the restrictions after surgery. I chose to get the minimally invasive technique and they did a great job.I am now in very little if any real pain. My leg pain is gone, I do not have pain in my hips our back, just the occasional muscle spasms. I personally would say go for it! The first 2 weeks post op suck, but after that it got better daily and walking as much as you can helps allot. I'm still healing and can't bend lift or twist much and to be honest that had been the hardest part for me lol. Good luck and if you have more questions on this please ask,I am more than happy to answer. I walked two miles today and NO PAIN. it's worth getting your life back believe me.

Hi, yes I did,I had numbness in my butt and in one leg from the knee to the foot. It came back slowly in about a month. It's weird feeling and my neurosurgeon said it's your nerves coming back to normal after being compressed. The first 2 weeks are the worst after surgery, things should start getting better fast for you now.good luck and hope you get better soon.

I had same surgery on March 11th 2016.L5S1 fusion with Tlif. surgery was fine no pain in back at all, but I already knew my nerve pain was permanent so it is still hurting down leg and I have drop foot. The surgery should help you, its alittlte rough for a couple of weeks. You will have rehab after hospital stay. I am walking no problem and no back pain. good luck

Hello,
I had a dry L5 s1 bone on bone, and I had the alif fusion. The pain was horrible, and I lived that way for a year. I could not stand, sit, and I walked all bent over. I was living in a 8, 9,10 pain scale. I had the shots, pills and still was in bad quality. I had the fusion 3.5 hours from my home.. I am in pain still, and still in recovery and taking pain medication. It caused such emotional issues like anxiety every morning I wake up. The recovery early on was terrible, but I had no choice I needed surgery. I am in less pain, and I am 7 months post op. I would go for the surgery if you are bone on bone. It will reduce your pain if you are lucky to find the right doctor. I to was lifeless and felt hopeless. I don't know where I would be if I did not have the surgery. I have pain under my butt and behind my legs and in my butt, and some hip pain every now and then. Please look into surgery It helped me. I have scoliosis as well in my lower lumbar that could not be fixed and spinal stenosis. Best of luck to you. I am walking better.

I just had L5-S1 anterior and posterior surgery, a little less then 2week. I had really bad pain going down my left side and in butt, with stapping pain in back. I had two surgeries on the same spot, first worked then my disk got mashed, so they did spinal fision. I was so scared before with Anxiety and some depression. I couldn't live away from my bed or chair for more then an hour. I have two kids. So i had the surgery. I feel the first week pain, i couldn't get it under control, till about two days ago. Day by day it goes down, with ice pack. I try to do everything the doctor says, but has i feel less pain i move in more normal ways, i scared it would heal right.
