Anterior Cervical Discectomy with fusion - recovery?

Started by CheerMom on 03/14/2016 7:56am

Hello, I am new to this forum and usually very private. I'm having surgery in a few weeks at the C5-C6 and C6-C7 levels. I'm starting to get very nervous about the risks and recovery.

I'm a 45 yr old Mom with two busy teens. I had a discectomy at the L4-L5 level 18 years ago. It was successful! But this surgery feels different.

I would love any feedback from you. TIA

Hi cheermom I am 1 week post op c6c7 acdf I can tell you I was nervous too before surgery but a friend of mine said to me do you trust the doctors and nurses and I said yes and they said well you have nothing to worry about and do you know what I have a very smart friend. From the moment I woke up in recovery I knew the surgery had worked my arms and hands felt different I could actually feel my pinkie fingers and I felt the strength in my arms and hands now I'm not saying this kind of recovery will happen for you but have faith in the surgeons and listen to what they tell you. My advice is that if you have a special pillow at home take it because I didn't and I wish I did because the hospital pillows were too soft and therefore I got pain in my shoulders and between my shoulder blades but since being home that pain has gone. For the past 2 days I have had no pain at the wound site so expect some pain there also I found I have a small amount of pain at the back of my neck but they told me that's normal as each day goes by that pain gets a little less, your throat maybe sore and a bit hard to swallow just take little sips of drink and small bites of food this is also starting to get a bit easier as each day passes. I am starting to feel like my old self which is great but frustrating because I feel so good I want to do things but know I can't so listen to your doctors and take care. Good luck with your surgery let me know how you go. Sorry this was so long winded.

Hi. I can't advise but I've just been referred to a neurosurgeon which I am surprised about as I didn't think I was that bad. I just thought I'd follow this thread with interest. I have disc degeneration at c5, c6, C7. The disc at the C8 (T1?) junction is compressed. I have numbness and weakness in my left little finger and weakness at the elbow. I can grip but can't hold anything heavy or bulky. Down my right side, I have pain from my neck to my shoulder and a numb pinky. I also feel numb around that side of my face, too. I can function but am slow and drop things like keys, change and break zips.
