Large disc extrusions, LS spine

Started by luvhorses on 05/23/2015 8:46am

Recent onset of back pain with pain down leg front and back/lateral side. Back pain was really bad at first but lessened considerably after the leg pain started a few days later. Saw spine spec MD--ordered MRI--MRI shows large disc extrusions impinging associated nerve roots at L3-4 and L5-S1. Upper level extrusion measures 24 mm and the lower level extrusion measures 29 mm (per MRI). Also have constant 50% numbness below the knee. No significant weakness of the leg, although it tends to feel heavy and awkward when I'm on it for 1/2 hour or more.

Prescribed Medrol Dosepak on my first visit with spine MD--worked great ... for about 3 days, and then pain/numbness back.

Saw pain management MD who recommended transforaminal steroid injections at both levels and an EMG. I'm also in PT.

I think those are large extrusions. No one has told me if they will go away on their own. No one has recommended surgery.

Any experiences or insights about extrusions this large?

I don't know how to edit the message. I just noticed something I wanted to change--The pain was much better on the Medrolpak but the numbness below the knee was still there. It is there constantly.
