Removal of hardware 14 years post L4 L5 S1 fusion

Started by 1415829954@facebook on 08/08/2014 7:02pm

Had fusion 14 years ago. Have had miserable pain for over three years now. Surgeon would like to remove hardware. He feels it's causing a lot of the pain. I am scheduled to have this done September 4th. I can't be away from my job long as my husband is disabled and I am the only one working. Doc said two weeks I should be able to go back to work. Anyone out there have this done? How long did it take you to recover?
Thanks for any advice.
Robin

i have hardware at my l4-l5. put in place almost 11 years ago and was told that removing it would not solve any pain problems. have them check your pelvic nerves or your sciatic nerve first. i wanted my titanium removed but every doctor i see refuses to do it. and idk about the whole 2 weeks thing. considering that the titanium has been your "stability" for that part of your spine for 14 years, its going to take a lot longer than 2 weeks for your body to adapt to not having that extra stability there especially in the part of the body that supports the rest of the body.

Thank you for your post. I have been so miserable that I plan to go ahead with the removal. I will expect to be out as long as it takes. I will just have to have faith the Lord will provide. Thanks again.

Had hardware removed last Thursday. Right away my leg pain was gone along with the pain into my right buttock. In its place of course I have pretty significant surgery pain. A lot of swelling at the lop of surgery site. The put me on antibiotics today to make sure infection isn't setting in. I will update as time goes. I am still hopeful.

Hello Robin,
I am new to this group today. I am in a similar situation as you were. Rods and pedicle screws at S1/L5 in me for 13 years. Always had back pain at the incision site post op. Original surgeon assured me that the pain could not be generated from the hardware. New Dr was shocked at the large size of the hardware and wants it out now. He claims that it is generating the pain How did you do from yours?
Thank You
Joe
