Multiple ruptured thoracic discs...anyone?

Started by upanddown on 03/27/2013 10:58am

I know it's rare to have ruptured discs in the thoracic area, but if I have 5 of them, surely someone else has at least one or two? (Feeling a little alone in this...and scared.)
Anyone else who has this going on, or has been through it, I would really appreciate your input.

I am waiting on the order for an MRI or MYLOGRAM now...i am also waiting for a date for surgery...i have had 2 cervical fusions and 1 Hemilaminotomy( CLEANUP JOB) on right side L4-L5..."this" CLEANUP surgery will be the left side L5 except DOC wants to not only go in on the back but also on the side...got to make room for the nerves...LOL...anyway i have been having right side pain for years...it started in the rib cage ( felt like a small football stuck in my ribs ) area increasing in pain till now the spasms are lasting longer than just catching your breath...it is lasting a minute...it scared me good, started to think it would not let go...i also get these muscle knots on the right side and the pain travels up till right under the shoulder blade, and i almost screamed when i tried to put my hair in a ponytail....IS this something like you are having???? ...i was diagnosed with T-9 arthritis in 1991...my DOC told me HE really needs a mylogram ( after the first surgery he did on me ) to tell the extent of damage in there because the MRI's do not show the extent of damage HE finds when he goes in...i have DDD, DJD, Osteoarthritis, HNP, Lumbar Stenosis, Radiculitis, & Cervical Spondyleosis w/ Myelopathy, FBS, and since 2008 i now have scoliosis...
so if you don't mind sharing your pain symptoms, i sure would appreciate it...i am 58 and my spine is 78, or so 2 neuro specialists have told me... i have been having pain going on for 20 plus years...
i would really like to know if you are having the same pain in your thoracic area then i would have an idea about what is going on....CAUSE as long as i know what it is i can deal with it much better than if i DO NOT know....understand what i am saying?
also i would like to thank you so much for posting about your problem...i pray you find answers soon and that God in HIS infinite wisdom gives you peace....wishing you a good night....spiralfall

Symptoms. Burning between my shoulder blades, the pain then wraps around my right rib cage and feels like I'm being stabbed. (Makes it hard to breath at times.) I've had a two level lumbar fusion and a one level cervical fusion. This thoracic pain can bring me to my knees.
I guess because it's so rare, it's the last thing they think to look for.
When I had a c-spine mylogram for the pain I was still experiencing after my cervical fusion, it was in the upper t-spine where I felt the pain. The Dr. still thought it was referred pain from my neck but ordered the thoracic MRI. He couldn't believe the amount and severity of the injury/damage. I'm being scheduled for a cortisone shot. (Always the 1st step.) I have to say, I'm scared and not looking forward to it. (Tired of all the shots and needles in my spine.)
Thank you for your input. It's really hard to find people who suffer from this. Let me know how you get on.
Best of luck and God bless. :)

Thought I'd mention (although I don't know if these symptoms are related) that I have increased lumbar, hip, and sciatica pain, with left leg weakness. Arms and hand weakness also. My upper back and rib pain is worsening quickly and the only relief I can get (apart from meds), is laying down on my back. It feels like my head is too heavy for my upper and mid back to support.
How about you?

P.S. I cut my hair super short because I too couldn't deal with the pain of putting my hair in a simple ponytail.

Hi om my last MRI scan 18 months ago they found I a new onset of a mild thoracic scoliois it was not there the year before and C6/C7 I needed a fuson so I went through the surgery. I two before C3-C6 fusion , I also have spondylotic cervical myelopayhy, a compromise at L4/5 L5/S1 and other things going on with my spine this all started in 2007 I was oniy 32. I can say out of all of thease things that have happen the thoracic pain is the worse, I had to ring my pain doctor 4wks ago and tell him I cant sit up for longer then 20mins with out cripling pain I have to lie on my right side for to hours with out moving for the pain to ease off so I understand you being scared. What have your doctors said is there any compersion to your spinal cord what are they going to do for you and how is pain. If you just need to talk any time mesasge me in 2007 I was so scared a one parent mother, the things that go through your mind I had to stop work for months who was going to pay the bill was I goig to walk again ext so I understand you beening scared. GOOD LUCK
