Redo on l4-s1 on 2 year old fusion.

Started by deniselynn on 01/09/2013 9:37am

First time ever on any site, but have read many. I had a 2 level fusion on 1-2011 and never was pain free but was doing better, then about 8 months in it started getting worse with leg and hip pain. long story short went to hospital and they said everything looked good this at 1 year after fusion and talked my surgen into letting me do injections helped for a min then got worse did more injections ended in emergency again 1 year 8 mo. after fusion found out im not fused at all at l4-5 and barely at l5-s1, shocked would be a under statement finally saw my doc again an did cat scan to confirm and im sceduled for sugery on 1-28 in a couple of weeks to do it from the back this time. Im scared in pain and mad that this wasn't detected earlier and I did get a second opinion has anyone had this happen with no fusion and went back for another?

hello denise sorry to hear your not fused. I hope you dont smoke and get a radio wave belt it helps the fusion grow. hope this time you have a pain free life.

Hey Larry, thanks and I quit smoking about a year and a half before surgery so I don't know why It didn't work. But I will try the belt you are talking about and any thing else that will help. Tired of being in extreme pain ready to get it on a more managable level.

What does a radio wave belt do?

hi denise this belt makes radio waves which gets the fusion working . It took a year for my fusion to be 100% fused together . did you do check ups from last surgery they took pics of my spine to see if fusion was growing. ask your surgeon about it also did you wear a brace on last surgery? I had a broken back and they have my lumbar all fused with 8 screw and two rods all steel. anyway I hope you heal well also walk as much as you can my muscles are still healing dont bend and get a grabber so you dont have to bend to pickup things on the floor.

Hey Larry, thanks for talking with me. I did see my surgen on like every three mo. for first year and he did take xrays and I did wear a brace for a long time and he did my fusion from the front I had stenosis and degenerative disc I have 6 screws and cages he put the screws in a weird way he's a nerosurgen and im not really happy with him he had to have known I wasn't fused and I went to emergency room and took xray's and mri one year into fusion and they said everything looked good I took their word for it and when I saw my doc right after that he took xrays and he looked at mri thats when I asked him to refer me to the lady who had done injections before fusion I had severe hip and leg pain he let me go and I did facet injections it helped for the nerve pain for a little while and and I did RFA for longer term that was hell didn't help and pain in back and nerve got worse so er again they took xray and this time someone got it right no fusion at l4-5 and min. at l5-s1 needless to say I was MAD. Why didn't my doc say something or try bone growth or anything I got my records an xrays I could tell there was not fusion. let my doc no and set up second opion with orthapedic who said same thing my doc said second fusion from back this time if i hoped for any relief. I decided to go ahead with my doc because he is nerosurgen an I only have medicaide and it's not his fault I didn't fuse it's his fault he didn't do any thing . Im proactive with getting my own records and checking for now on. And hospital should have mentioned I wasn't fused the first time I went. Sorry so long winded my surgery is on the 28 in a couple of weeks am I being stupid for letting him operate again? And I do have a grabber but don't use as much as I should I do walk just brings on pain now because everything is worse. After surgery I will not lift or do stuff im not supposed to can't take any chances again.

gosh denise are you on disabilty just curious. You can try it again maybe it just didnt take but the check ups he could at least take a pic to see how the bone is fuseing. my surgeon is a orthopedic surgeon. hes is really good. to bad you couldnt get him to fix your spine. the only time i really have some pain is because i sit to long as far as walking I feel like great walking. but the way things are now for you wont have much of a chioce. dont let him forget about the radio wave belt and xray every once in a while. my surgeon has a machine it takes like 3d pics its not even close to a xray. I will say a prayer for you. . ps how long has this dr. been doing this?

Larry after it was done I felt good walking to, but it's gotten worse the past six months guess because the screw are loose and inflamation. As for the doc, he took pics and yes he should have known so that will be a question for a lawyer, lol. And he works for big practice and I don't know how long good question. Im not on disabiility but been waiting for a hearing on it, i don't have enough work credits being a house wife messed that up. I still hope to get pain under enough control to work because I had just finished school when when my back went off for good. Hoping stabalizing my spine will help, sucks but what can you do. Glad you are doing good.

Hello
My first time on a site like ths.
23 years ago i had a bone fusion L3-L5....short version...it didnt work and the pain was emense..and my condition deterioated to the point that i woke up to let the cat out of my bedroom and was unable to walk.
I was rushed up to the spinal surgeon who did the first fusion and ended up with titanium rods screws bolts.
22 years on from that aged 41 now 8 children later ( 2 sets of twins an im back to square 1 with the pain..discovered the disc directly above the fusion has deteriioated and the say they wont do anything other than physio.
Pain,,,Thats an understatement.

hey everyone I dont no why my surgeon uses steel . I had a lot of things going against me, I have diabetes also somtimes some fusions dont go the way they have for others. my fusion didnt do what the surgeon wanted thats when I got a call from a guy who deliverd my radio wave belt. and I told my self like this is going to work. after a while my finger nails growing like crazy., so I figured if my nails were growing then my fusion should be. I hope that everyone gets fixed up and can have a betr life from being in pain. Maybe denise they have come a long way in just 2 years he will put betr screws and rods and get everthing the way it should have been..

Denise, I had a L3-4 fusion July 2010 I`m still in pain but It still helped me a lot..I can sit in a chair for hours if I need to. (pre 5 mins). Try not to have a open back fusion. When they cut through your muscles/nerves. That`s where my pain comes from now.Plus where my nerves were crushed in the canals from over bone growth.Your real young your body just didn`t take what they used to fuse you.Going back to the same doctor well,He should know what he did wroug. ,My doc didn`t see me after 3 months He said I was great. I couldn`t walk. I was walking with a walker that day! presurgery no walker. Now I`m Ok . Doctor`s move on to fast they make many mistakes on us. Sam

Hey Yall, thanks for the feedback I have been busy this last week and just trying to come to terms with the new surgery. I would love to be able to sit again without all the pain. And im sorry for your pain Mandy I have twins also but only one set and im 44, I just looked up your phisio don't know how to spell. Have you tryed it yet, im back on my tens unit right now had to order new pads it helps a little but i would lost with out my meds which iv grown to be immune on. I read on the pain pain forum about the nerotransmitter and if i can't get this surgery to work i would try it. Im gonna try and be positive to help the healing, lololol. So hard but im trying they do say it helps my attitude is something im working on I just let the pain get to me because lets face it, it sucks. My twins girls are 15 now and my oldest is 20 they do not understand about this pain thing and everybody is tired of mom not being able to do as much as i could. Hoping this fusion takes and i can at least have some control of the pain with out a bunch of drugs. which i don't have enough of.

deniselynn hi you should try and find a rehab center that is for in patient treatment. you wont like it at first but you will be glad you did. they teach you how and what you will be able to do. they have all kinds of stuff there for helping your spine to heal . they had me bowling , and cycling it doesnt go any where. helps muscles. good luck

That is surely strange. My cervical spine fusion is now causing me problems. In some ways, we seem to have gone thru quite a problem.
I had my fusion on 20 Aug. 13. After 6 wks., the sevre pain in r. hand and arm totally disappeared and I felt so blessed as the pain had been bad since 1981. I had treatment for the pain for a number of yrs. But then spinal stenosis happened and I had great faith in the surgery. But last weeki, the pain returned w/a vengeance. Surgeon ordered a cervical MRI to be done today. Now I await the results. I may have to have another fusion. I'm wondering if this has happened to others?
Lastly, I have had such a sore throat since teh fusioin---they cut across the front of my throat to do the fusion. I understand one can have a sore throat, but is this going to last forever? It has been almost 5 months and my throat HURTS and burns.

Deniselynn,

Please reconsider your surgery. I am 4 months out of a second failed fusion. I had my first failed in 2009. I too had loose screws. I have issues with my T spine and Cervical spine. I had cervical fusion in April last year. My body is rejecting the material from both surgeries,
The Pain from the lumbar surgery which they went in from the posterier (the back) was unbearable. I am now worse off than before. I am bed ridden and can't do a whole lot. Prayers are with you in your decision. I would reconsider and really pray and think about it before going through it again. Just my humble honest opinion.

Oh lord yall know how you feel and the person who had two failed, damn. Im set with this im in alot of pain so if there is a chance they can fix I have to take it. Scared though i have two days left before surgery and first time it was from front and this time is from the back.. and if I could just get through the day and have a life again I would be happy. And my kids are mean, and have no empathy for none of it. I've tried all injections an RA . Prayer needed. Let yall know how it goes after i can function. scared.

Denise Lynn, Your going for a big surgery in a short time we all get scared. You will be one of the 33% that get better. They say 33% stay the same so your odds are really good. Plus you already had a surgery that wasn`t good. If a doctor said I could have a 20% chance(to be pain free) knowing the pain of a fusion. I would do it again.I wish you the best of luck. Sam

Im bak spent 5 days because of bladder quit but went to moms for two days and came home yesterday. Really have a disfunctional family and I will leave it at that. Surgery went as planned and when he moved my spine it showed that l4-l5 was moving and hopefully causing all extra pain. he fused from the back l4-s1 with 6 more screws and rods. Im in pain from surgery and had these weird blisters pop up I did have a reaction from adesive tape but blisters were onder guaze.. Called the doc waiting to here it hurts to wear back brace. thanks for your prayers keep them coming im having leg and hip pain guess from swelling did have before. Talk soon.

I had 2-level ACDF March 2011, pain eased significantly until one year later...then has worsened to the point of misery. Xray and MRI show one fused completely and one didn't, but is "stable". Last year I had 3 epidural steroid injections (did nothing but cost me $900) and I just went through 2 rounds of facet joint injections (4 injections each round) and they have done nothing but cost much more AND causing more pain than the original. Burning pain, just miserable. Pain management doc said that if the FJI's don't work, there's nothing more she can do other than prescription med monitoring. Neurosurgeon said that redoing the non-fusion (and fixing the one above since that's herniated) will not guarantee pain relief. Also, anytime they do 2-level, there's a higher chance that one won't fully fuse. So I'm almost back in the same odds of success. If they decide to do surgery and redo the fusion there is no guarantee that it will fuse either so I'm sorta stuck now just eating pain pills to "manage" the pain and try and function as much as possible. Nothing quite like nibbling on a Norco during the day to take the edge off and ensure I can still work. Sigh. But my current problem is that the pain meds and SOMA muscle relaxers are doing NOTHING to help the burning pain from the facet joint injections. It's been one week and the injection sites are still VERY tender and bruised and the pain from the injections is worse. She used more medicine this time and moved down one level. Unfortunately she can't inject at the site of the pain (where I'm not fused) because of the hardware. So I'm not sure why we even bothered attempting the injections into joints that are above the pain site. I trusted them to guide me and really shouldn't have. Especially when my first visit she said "OMG you can't take Norco and Soma for over a year without being extremely dangerous!!! We will need to get you onto something different." Ok, whatever you say. But when I went in for 2nd round of injections she said "are the meds working for you, if so we'll keep you on them" Uhm, excuse me??? How do you go from "OMG you can't take that" to "eh, go ahead and keeping taking them"? Which one is your final answer because that does NOT give me a warm fuzzy.

Not sure if my story helps you, but I am in the middle of a failed C5-6 fusion and I'm stumped as to the next steps to take. But I wish you all the best and please keep posting. It helps to know we're not alone and that it's NOT in our head. HAHAHA, it's in my neck, not my head :-)

hi denise well I was reading you are back to being fused again, I hope you get a radio wave belt for your fusion, are you wearing a tee shirt under your brace, take some really hot as you can stand showers just let the water run down over your incision it will help hopefully you will fuse together this time. also stay straight and dont bend, buy a grabber, and a long handle shoe horn. . do not pick up anything thats heavy and walk and good luck to you and its tough to lay on the back for a while .

I too wore a bone stimulator. It worked very well for me!! My surgeon kept a close eye on my progress. I went back in one month then two months, 3 months and I'm fusing very nicely. I'll not go back now till my 6month post surgery. I've has some severe sciatic pain through my left hip down my leg to and including my first 3 toes. After 3 months of that, it is just now starting to ease off a little. But from everything I've been reading, 6 months is the magic number for fusion patients. Oh, I was fused from L-1 to S-1 via tummy and my back. It's not been a pleasant experience to say the least :( But good luck!!!

ACDF ice is good for those facet joints i keopt ice on for long periods. And don't know why they wont do where the hardware is, they did mine but she was shocked to find out i wasn't fused. And Mandy I will look and thanks to everyone else im trying to keep from doing stuff I shouldn't im stressed with home life need to get a grip.. Doing better then expected, but pain has to be managed. Poping pills on scedule. lol

Hi Deniselynn! I found your post and was reading through your ordeal. It truely sounded like a long & painful road, but just think you're on your road to a full and pain free recovery. I've had 2 laminectomy's & a posterior and anterior spinal fusions about a yr ago. I noticed a couple of other people suggesting that you get a bone growth stimulator. I had one after my fusion and it really helps the fusion to grow and fully fuse stronger & quicker. Keeping you in my prayers that you will start feeling much better & that this fusion will be a success. Remember be careful in all your movements and no lifting or twisting l, and follow Dr orders, and keep up with the meds so they can help your body to heal itself. Keep us updated on how you are doing because we all care and understand what you are going through. My prayers are with you!!
