Thoracic (mid-upper back) pain. Anyone?

Started by upanddown on 11/08/2012 9:58pm

I've been suffering from thoracic pain for a couple of years now. The pain is from the middle of my back and stops a couple of inches below my neck. I also have inter-scapular ( between the shoulder blades) pain.
If I've used my arms ( folding laundry, cooking), or tilted my head, even for just several minutes, I get sharp stabbing pains in my ribs on the front right side. It can get so painful that breathing hurts.
I had an A.C.D.F. of C,6-7. in Sept. of this year. It got rid of the arm and hand pain, but I still have this thoracic pain.
Does anyone experience similar pain, or share a similar pain pattern? Do you know the cause? Have you had a diagnosis? Treatment plan? Tests? Surgery? What things help manage the pain? How long have you suffered? Is it better or worse than when it first started?
Any info, advice or tips, however small, is greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance for taking the time to respond,
Janet. :)

Hey Janet,
sorry to hear that you are experiencing this awful sharp pain. have you ever tried water rehabilitation? my surgeon recommended water therapy for me after all my surgeries, it really does help it takes the pressure of your body so its easier to move around. unfortunately I had to discontinue when my insurance coverage ran out as it cost $70 per hour :( but I know you are in the USA so maybe its cheaper there? just an idea for you but it really did help me get to my best that I will get. they say 5 years after your surgery if you still have pain/problems they are more than likely going to be life long.hope you find something that helps ease your pain. ps>have you heard from Rene yet??hope she is ok. Hi Janet,,if u havnt noticed I havnt been on the site 4 more than a month,I havnt been in a good physical n mental state..I too have been complaining to docs about the same burning, stabbing pain,so they finally did a thoracic n lumnbar MRI,,they usually dont do thoracics cause its very rare to have disc issues in that area,,The findings are I have a hemangioma at T5 /L1,,not one disc left in lumbar area, multiple thorasic disc bulges and C5/ C6 herniations and those changes R only 7 wks since my cervical surgery, thats how fast my spine is disinterigrating from the DDD..my point being make those doctors due a thoracic MRI,,hope U feel better,,Rene :)

Thanks Kim for your suggestion, I'll ask about water therapy next time I see the Dr.
Rene, there you are...I was worried. I'm so glad they did that thoracic mri on you. (I'll be demanding one when I see the surgeon in Dec.) So what is in your future as far as treatment goes? (Bet you're thinking about that mop handle aren't you?! :) Jokes aside, what are they going to do now? Did they give you decent meds for the pain to get you through 'till they do something? I'm so sorry to hear what they found Rene, bet you felt like screaming, "I told you you there was something wrong!" We know our own body better than anyone, but Dr's don't believe us...
Keep us informed Rene, we really were worried about you. I'll be looking out for your posts,
Janet :)

3 months post op. The pain is back in my arm although is doesn't reach my hand. This well and truly sucks. I'm no better than before the surgery.
My Lumbar fusion was great...for several years at least, and I noticed a difference right away. This latest fusion of the c-spine though...not good.
So now I think it's just a case of staying on top of the pain. ( Which is a topic on its own.)
Janet. :)
