Burning and stabbing pain at incision site

Started by Dana H A on 10/10/2012 4:37pm

Hi Everyone! Hoping to get some answers here. I am 4 and a half weeks out of second Lumbar fusion, I am having horrible burning and stabbing pain at the incision site. I don't remember going through this with my first first fusion. At times, I swear I can feel the rod on the right move (I did go through this immediately following the first surgery). I am feeling like something is going horribly wrong again but hoping and praying that it isn't. For the most part I feel a bit better (not much though) but this time around, I have also lost a considerable amount of weight. I know that my meds (perhaps because I have been on them so long 8 years) aren't doing much to help with the issue. I was sent home with Norco 10/325. fentanyl 75/ every 24 hours and Soma. It helped for a bit and then I switched back to what I was on pre-surgery which is Percocet 10, the fentanyl, and Soma. They really had a horrible time controlling my pain while I was in the hospital. Please let me know if anyone has had this to occur. I am scarred to call the doctor to ask, I go for my 6 week check up next week. I want to be prepared. The surgeon that did my surgery is awesome. I just don't want to think that it is failing AGAIN. I have horrible bones and a multitude of other health issues anyway. I would love to come off of my meds at some point.

Hi Dana,,is the incission site red or warm to the touch? any drainage noted,,a clear fluid, when the fluid dryes on the outside it will look light yellow and if u roll ur finger on it and its flacky like, that would B a sign of infection. If U dont have any of that,Ur feeling what is a normal part of the healing process, remember they had to cut through ur muscles and during the healing process your muscles are reconnecting...But if this continues past about 12 weaks then I would notify ur doc,,dont get nervous,,hang in there n keep me posted, Id B happy to answer any other medical concerns U have. Keep the site clean n dry, and open to air. Feel better,, also a swollen boggy feeling is something U should watch for also,,DO NOT apply heat to the area only ice,,U can use a bag of frozen veggies, and when u apply anything cold to the site always make sure u put a towel on ur skin first as a barrier, never apply ice or cold pack w/out that barrier.. :)Nurse Rene M. :) :) one more thing,,about the phentynal patch,,,usually u change it every 72 hours and always change the applicatin sites, never on ur chest wall on the side of ur heart, if u were told every 24 hours than do as doc said, but usually it is changed evry 3 days, also on top of patch u should be applying an opt site covering (clear sticky square or u can use a large bandaid. If u put heat on it it acts faster ( but I shouldnt B telling U that) its a nursing secret, so shhhhh dont tell anyone,oops,lol...

Thank You Rene! I don't have any drainage redness, or swelling, Just the burning/stabbing pain. I am so at my wits end. I guess because of the initial failed fusion, I am completely freaking out. I should have put that my patch is every 48 hours instead, PM changed it to 48 because the full 72 I was getting no relief, I am so afaid. I think too that I am over doing it too just being 5 weeks today out. I am noticing today that my right foot is getting bad, I don't think that I mentioned that I after my failed fusion I developed what they are saying is RSD and Nueropathy, My left foot and leg are already horrible I was hoping for a miracle. Now today I have noticed lost sensation in the top of my right foot. I appreciate you so much for answering questions. I hope you are having a good day. :)
