Hello everyone, I'm new to the site! I'm looking for some insight on how I can find the right neurosurgeon to help me with my back. I have seen numerous ones in my area and have heard the same thing over and over again, "Sorry, there is nothing we can do for you". OK here's the problem.....I'm 37 years old and a roofer, 5 yrs ago I was in a construction accident, the staging i was on collapsed...I hit the ground 1st from 17' and then staging and all materials on staging landed on top of me (was a 1,000lb real life pig pile with myself on the bottom). I've had 4 MRIs, all have indicated L3,L4,L5 to be damaged, small tear at S1, torn ligaments in my spine, disc degenerative disease. I have gone to physical therapy, which i had to stop going to because of the amount of pain I was in and was making things worse on myself. I have had facet/nerve block injections. At the moment I'm on medications for my pain management. Each doctor feels I am well enough to go back to work, I cannot live in this pain that I have everyday, it is putting me in a depressed state. I also don't want to rely on medication. I seen 1 doctor who had said that.."They should have operated on this after my accident and your outcome would be totally different than it is now". So, what i gather is, 5 yrs ago it would of been ok to operate on my back to fix it, but now we wont touch you, you need to suffer...basically thats what I'm doing..suffering! Any advice or help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you all!

Hi Stephen,
Sorry to hear you've had to deal with unsuccessful treatment for so long. What exactly is damaged L3-L5? Are you seeing an Ortho or Neuro? Is your Pain Managment doctor a spine specialist? Maybe ask him for a neurosurgeon referral if you haven't already. My other thought is maybe an alternative type of imaging would be helpful such as a bone scan or myelogram. I have a Pacemaker so unable to have MRI's. My original CT scans only showed a mild protruding disc however it was the bone scan and myelogram that indicated what was really wrong. Maybe there is something else going on that they CAN help you with. Why are they saying they won't they "touch it"? Is there too much of a risk, do they feel it would cause further complications? You may need to spend some time finding the right surgeon. I know it's frustrating and takes time but it sounds like you're not getting very far with your current doctors. Maybe even try to research some of the top neuro's at a major hospital or on the Internet. I can't imagine being told to just live with it and be in that much pain :). Best of luck to you.

I'm a spine surgery PA that treats scoliosis and degenerative spine patients and wanted to let you know about two scoliosis organizations that might be helpful. Even though you don't have scoliosis, most scoliosis clinicians see complex traumatic and degenerative spine conditions that the usual spine surgeon won't touch. Only 2-3% of spine surgeons out there see these complex issues.

1.www.SRS.org - Scoliosis Research Society. You can find scoliosis clinicians in your area throughout the world.
2.www.scoliosis-assoc.org/ - Scoliosis Association, Inc. You can find support groups in your area throughout the U.S. or at the very least network with other spine patients who might be able to give you tips and suggest clinicians in your area.

There are actually quite a few resources out there for information, networking, and different alternative treatments. Hope this helps!

I could start by griping about how much pain I'm in,but u already have been exposed 2 that enuf!Iwanna start off positive because that's the only way u are going 2 find any semblance of normalcy,or hapiness again, man. If u don't smoke weed now, find out if u can access it cause it is the most consistent & reliable pain killer I have used 2 date.Check out my profile 2 see exactly what I'm dealing with, the amounts of pain I have been subjected 2 just in the last couple of months is unimaginable 2 the ordinary individual,as u well know.Yesterday the family doc & I decided(my decision more than his,as I have the pain here!)2 add another 5 mcg of buprenorphine,so now I'm on 15 mcg total. At least I got rid of the percocet, that's a huge relief 4 both me & doc.I spent almost 3 weeks in March in hospital trying 2 get the pain under control, finally success with the patch, stool softener as I can no longer push,beta-blocker 2 maintain BP & HR,2 anti-inflammatories 2 aid in digestion,2 muscle relaxers @ night 2 help sleep,it goes on.After the hospital stay doc sent me home 2 convalesce as they can no longer help me,no surgical options with + outcome save 4 oblation therapy,cortico-steroid facet injections 4 T 4 thru 7,supposedly the worst of my discs, they haven't seen the rest of my spine,HAHAHA,I am now down 2 less than 25% functional capacity as I now have the spine of an 80 year old.okay, now I'll concentrate on the +'s.spinelessinalberta :)

When I was in hospital,I discovered that my partner of almost 24 years was no longer interested in me,she has her own health issues which r not equal 2 the requirements of mine as we don't know where the degeneration will leave me @ when it is thru with it's progression. But this turn of events was the thing that lead me 2 seek solace & comfort in The Lord,Jesus Christ's Kingdom, where I soon discovered He was waiting 4 me with open arms. The people around me have provided me with the help I have needed 2 get thru this, without them I wouldn't know what 2 do,as this condition has now left me quite helpless,I can still walk short distances,& I pay 4 it,believe me,ANY movement causes some kind of pain somewhere, but I am learning how 2 cope much better now, with positive thinking,GANJA is a very big part of my therapy,as I say,if u can access it.Swimming pool is instant relief, direct heat soothes, plus my painkiller regimen,I am doing alot better now, your situation is different,we all have our crosses 2 bear, that is key 2,self-confidence,brother!It & a positive outlook will go an awful long way, man.Last time I had injections, same as usual,every1 sad,no smiles anywhere,I had that whole place roaring when I left cause that numbing agent makes me crack up,HAHAHA,keep your chin up,up,up,I know,I sound stupid & crazy, but look what I'm facing,u COULD BE ME!!!!spinelessinalberta :)

I cannot address your medical issues except to say my spine is way worse than yours and I have finally - after a decade of intense pain - found relief!
I have severe stenosis,& spondylolisthesis at multiple levels, and lumbar scoliosis. I was first deecompressed & fused at L4-5 in early 2006. By 2010 I needed 2 veretebrae removed completely and replaced by a metal plate, and C2-T2 fused.(10 more levels). If they could convince me to, the Dr.s would also fuse me from my Sacrum to T10. That will never happen unless it's to preserve me from paralysis.
Enough of this description of my spine issues-suffice to say they are severe, and mostly a result of arthritis for 30 yrs. (Although I also had several lumbar strains, and one neck sprain from an assault.)
The real excitement is I now have pain relief I didn't think was possible! And it didn't come from surgery, that's for darn sure.
2 years ago I needed 90 mg of prescription methadone daily, and the pain was still so bad I was ready to stop walking with my 2 canes and go for the wheelchair. I had spend a decade hoping for pain to get better only to see it get worse and worse.
So 9 months ago I decide to give legal medical marijuana a try. Not my first experience with pot to be sure, but it had been a few years. I was amazed at the quality and variety of the medicine. Dispensaries are safe and easily accessible in the city of Seattle. I found that by using concentrates I got amazing pain relief! I now take 10 mg of methadone daily, and I am only 4 wks post-op after having a total knee replacement. To me it's a miracle. I'm getting some of my life back. While I may never be well enough to work again, at least my pain is no longer the focus of my life. I no longer suffer from all the side effects of so many opiates. I used to sleep 16 hours a day, my heart rate couldn't get over 50, and I always felt bad. Now I feel so much better, and I have HOPE.
This route may not be for everybody, but if you have suffered for a long time with chronic pain, I hope you give this a chance. You no longer have to smoke pot. You can ingest(eat) medicated food and drink. You can vape(doesn't burn it) bud, hash, hash oil, and other concentrated forms of THC.
You can use medicated glycerin tincture and administer it sublingually. There are multiple health benefits besides pain relief. You cannot start out on concentrates unless you already have a high tolerance. But if you gradually increase potency you can use as mush as a 60% THC concentrate and get unbelievable pain relief.I have no problem driving safely and people do not realize Im medicated. Even my skeptical doctor is becoming a believer as he watches me take less and less methadone. I am aiming to get off the methadone completely and try stepping down to something less potent, like oxycodone or vicodin.
I hope that the prejudice against marijuana changes quickly. It's a much healthier alternative than opiates, and can most certainly reduce the amount one needs to take.
I'm so sorry that many of you live in areas that prohibit it. I would consider moving to the West Coast.
