Here I go again, I think.

Started by Abnermalchik on 09/23/2011 12:17am

I've been having back problems for years. First surgery in 1982 L5 laminectomy, In 2005 C4/5 discectomy after 6 years of misdiagnosis by a very rude Dr. who thought I just had a drug problem, I guess I did but not like he thought. I hated the drugs and wanted the pain to stop. That was the problem. Now here I am again, my left leg hurts like crazy if I walk more than 20 feet or so, or uphill, or upstairs. also if I sit more than 30 minutes. I have numbness, tingling, horrible pain, etc.etc.etc. in my leg as well. Ice heat therapy helps a bit.
Would like to apply for SSI disability but how does one survive while waiting to be denied multiple times before I'm approved. I've kept my job but it's not easy. And after many horror stories about the SSI process i wonder if I'm even eligble. An ER Dr. said it's another disc, another said it's bursitus in my hip. Another said it's P.A.D. My gut says disc, but I guess I'll have to wait and see.

Hi Teri
It took me a year and half to get social security disabiliy approved. But you need to get a disability lawyer who will only charge you if they win for you. Mine got me approved for one payment for the time I first applied to the time I won in one big payment and then regular disability after the big payment. I think the Dr.s that Social Security sends you too to get approved, are told to disapprove everyone because I couldn't even walk hardly or bend, and like you I had already gone through multiple surgery's proving there was a big problem with my neck and lower back. I had to actually go to the judge 4 days after 4 fusions in my neck and could barely talk. I hope you get approved but you will have to get a attorney. Good luck to you Teri, I hope everything works out, as you know we can't handle stress. It causes us to hurt more.
So get a lawyer and let them handle the stress and you relax. A good one will get it for you. And there is no upfront payment to them. like I said they only get paid if you win. You can relax if a lawyer takes your case because they know which ones will get approved.

Joey,
Went to the Dr. today, he's finally decided it's bursitus in my hip AND another disc. I took your advice and have explored a few lawyers. Haven't heard from the 3 I called, but it's monday so i'll call a few more tomorrow and see what happens.

Hi Teri,
I just had my third surgery on the 21st of Sept. My 1st surgery was in June of 2006. It was a microdiscetomy. In Feb. of 2007 I had a fusion of L5-S1 and last Wednesday I had a L4-L5 fusion and they took out the hardware from my previous surgeries. Like you, it was my left side, leg, foot and buttocks. I really lucked up this time with an awesome pain management doctor and a great orthopaedic specialist surgeon. When I woke up in recovery, no more pain at all on my left side. I am in a good amount of pain, but nothing like the previous fusion. L4 had herniated and that was where the pain was coming from. The surgeon made enough room for the nerve that had been agiated and it is a great relief. I was scared of a third surgery, but I have to say that this time..the third one was a charm. Good luck to you. Make sure that you have a new MRI in the site that is bothering you. That is how we found out my problem. It took me 2 years to get SSD and I was denied the first time..I think just about everyone is the first time around. I resubmitted the paper work and saw the SSD doctor and within 6 months of that visit I had my money. Just don't give up. keep calling Social Security and keep submitting paperwork. The wait time for clearance now is a lot less of a wait then when I did it.

Well spoke to an Attorney today, was very helpful. I hadn't started my apllication for ssi Disability cuz the web page was rather intimidating, but talking to her really helped me feel better about how to start the process and she thinks givin my present condition as well as my history, I should be eligble. My age, 51 seems to be a help as well. She is sending me paperwork to get her office on the case, maybe I'm jumping the gun. But I figure having someone help from the beginning can only help it along. Making sure I get it all right the first time. Got my fingers crosssed. I saw the Dr. again too and he's putting me back in PT as per my request.

Hey Teri
Sounds great, I bet your feeling a little bit of relief now too. They will be able to get it for you the first time. Seems like when a lawyer is involved they don't try to drag it out anymore and approve it. Good luck and you will feel great when you get it because of the worry being gone and the fact you know you will have some money that you need coming in every month. That's the only walking that doesn't hurt that bad is to the mail box the 3rd of each month. Good luck

Lol Joey, lookin forward to limping to the mailbox for a a check. times have been really hard since this all started. had to cut back hours at work, lost my house, had to move in with my boyfriend, which is actually ok but I wasn't ready for that step yet. I'm a grandmother raising a 17yr old and didn't like the example it sets for her. Was putting it off til she turned 18. thankfully he's here for me and very supportive. And he had his right leg amputated right after I moved in so it's been great to be there for each other.

I'm sorry to hear about your house but glad it all worked out. That's my new requirement when I start dating again after the divorce is final. My headline will read Looking For A Woman with a Disability. Maybe we will get along that way because we will both understand where each other is coming from. Keep us posted on how you do with your surgery Teri. I'll sure say a prayer for you for a great outcome. Hopefully you will feel great and have a Disability check in the mail.

Well my leg and hip are hurting like hell. Haven't slept decent in days. Ice seems to help a bit but the pain meds are no help at all. (tramadol) Work is becoming impossible. Kinda depressed today, I know it's just because I'm tired of hurting.

Does this ever get better? I'm on state medicaid due to being single grandparent raising my 17yr old grandaughter and not being able to make ends meet since this back thing started again. Just found out no back specialist in my state (Utah) will accept medicaid. I feel like I'm destined to hurt forever now. No idea where to go from here. Any body have any ideas???

Hi Teri,
I feel like I read my own situation, only mine is Lumbar n I havnt worked since DEC. Surgery was in March. Now Im havn R Leg,(like u ) synptoms, my gut is disc too IM gonna push for MRI.My surgeon n I dont get along cause Im an orthopedic nurse, n he doesnt like me not agreeeing w him, Im currently looking for a new Neuro surgeon, as far as meds I go to my primary, where I get treated w respect, If u prefer ur primary just bring all your written reports, cause primarys dont read MRI discs. If they have all info they usually will take on ur need as far as meds.Plus I like the convenience of location. Everyone chooses a primary for closeness to home, just keep up w ur follow-up apt w ur surgeon ,of course........Hope u feel better, good luck on ur journey to wellness and Welcome to group. RENE :)

Hi Teri
I am very sore so not typing so great. I had to go in for a complete lumbar reconstruction Friday morning and got home last night. How far are you from state lines to get the surgery in the closest one. I am geussing you would have to find one in another state and then send them the paper work for approval. One thing you may try also is your attorney you have for your Social Security. They probably know every surgeon close enough to go too. They may actually know of someone in your area and may be able to help get it pushed through the right channels with the state to oversee your treatment is made available. They do know all the Dr.s because they have to send for everyones medical records. So that may be your best bet. Keep in touch, you may want to start a new post for a surgeon in your state. Someone on here may have used one. Please keep us informed, I really wish I could do more for you. Keep your head high Teri your a great person.

Bobby,
thanks for some good ideas, hope your healing up okay from your surgery. Having a pretty sore day myself, between the hip and back, well you know. Am thankful for you and this site cuz I don't feel so alone. wouldn't wish this on anybody but don't know anyone personally that can relate to what I'm going through. Helps to be able to discuss it with others that understand.

You hit the nail on the head on that one. No one relates to or understands what we are going through.Hopefully my divorce will be over soon so I can at least get rid of all that stress. Everyone thinks I should be healed after 6 weeks. It really is crazy and mean the way we are treated. By the way the name is just Joey, when I first found this site I used Joeybobbie for me and my wife to look at the site together, She never would even look at the site.Anyway I hope you find some info on a Surgeon.

Well went to ortho dr at local clinic, won't treat my back under my state insurance, but WILL treat the bursitus in my hip?? WTH?? Gave me injection in my hip (Cortizone) said if it didn't help it was probably back related pain. Well my hip was numb for a day, still couldn't walk much, by next day my limp was much worse, went to PT yesterday, did some traction. Pain not completely gone but I think it did relieve some pressure in my back. The hip is still pretty sore though.

Still haven't found a spine Dr. But the Dr. treating my hip is going to repair it after the holidays. I look at it as maybe hope for half the battle.

Hi Teri,
so sorry for all the pain your going thru. I was injured at work in April 2010 and waited til March 2011 till surgery. Had some injections in between that time but worked in such pain that to this day I still cry about it. My job is physical so working with blown disc was horrible. Was on morphine 3x a day prior to surgery. I had my l5-s1 fused. It was done minimal evasive but the recovery was very difficult for me. I was being weaned off the morphone after surgery and going thru that as well as having back surgery was way too much for me! I'm much better, just released by my surgeon but he put me on permnant restrictions of no more than 10lbs. My job required much more than that, so I'm waiting to hear from work comp what they are going to do. I am receiving comp checks but only 66% of my pay. I did go apply for social security disability as well as ssi. I'm sure I will be denied. Will probably have to check into a ss attorney. Good luck to you and my prayers are with you that you find some peace with your pain.

Well fell last night, about the 4th or 5th time due to weakness in my left leg. Now sore as hell from the whole thing! still working but had my hours cut down to about 12 a week. That fell through cuz we have been busy, holiday rush. So hopefully after the first of the year i'll get my hours cut and be able to rest more. Cuz it's killin me. I love my job so don't wanna give up yet. Also afraid of falling at work.

Well had an awesome holiday, as I hope you all did. But not so much fun right now. I can hardly move without wanting to scream. Seems every pain relief I've tried causes
some side effect. Never had things quite this bad. My left foot has been numb most of the day, though not a new symptom it's never lasted so long.

Nancy,
Prayers, best wishes and all kinds of good luck to you! especially the hearing since being able to financially make it is so important. And personally the stress of worrying about it all certainly aggravates all the physical stuff. As for my update well the medicaid runs out for me at the end of the month. my youngest turned 18 yesterday, in Utah that means you don't need to be healthy after such a milestone. I guess if your kids don't need you anymore....... I still haven't had the hip surgery or found a spine Dr. that will accept my insurance. Guess it doesn't matter now since i have no insurance. The Dr. that wants to fix the hip said he'll fix it for free if I can get the hospital to pitch their end in free too. Which i'm told is a huge runaround. We'll see.

Nurse Nancy,
Things have been going ok. I'm still at home and have nothing from work comp. My company will not take me back with my restrictions and stated they do not have any other positions for me either, but my status with the company hasn't changed. I am still receiving work comp checks. I am going to be starting medical billing/coding with an online school next week. Hopefully won't take long. I receive a certificate after successful completion. My social security status is they want me to go see one of there "quack" gp doctors. At least that is what I've heard of this doctor. Not sure what seeing this doctor will tell ss. Did you ever have to do this? Other wise my attorney has heard nothing from work comps attorney but is waiting on reply from them. So hear I sit day after day. Been doing ok. Taking 50mg of tramadol 2x a day and celebrex 2x a day as well. Pain is not bad as long as I keep activity not too much. I try to walk and do exercises with my 3lb weights on my exercise ball. How are you doing? Sounds like more surgerys in the future for you. Good luck and keep me updated on how you are and will keep you in mind with your hearing coming up in Feb. Let me know how it goes, will be praying it goes your way.

@Terri,yes this waiting is killing me,i just need t know in my mind what is in my future,i need to trust God more at times. One more month,i have binder and binder as my attorneys and they have been real good at preparing me.
@Mary Ann,
At first before i got the attorney for my social security case i did everything on my own, they did send me to one of their docs(a psychiatrist).....go figure, yes i have depression but my main issues in applying was for all my spine issues, and they never even sent me to a spine doc.At the time i did not have a lot of records gathered to submit. I got denied the first time, now my hearing day is finally coming up.....YEAH !Just remember if you have to appeal, records, records, and more records.Gather as much info as you can.I also paid $500out of pocket to get an IME exam recommended by my attorney. Now i have three docs all stating i can not work. Please pray, i am a little nervous. As far as work comp goes in California you only get payed 2 years(that part really
sucks, especially because they dragged their feet and FINALLY did my surgery after 2 years,so three months after my fusion they were done paying me.Now i just get state disability for a little longer. That is why i pray i win my social security, because not only will i have some kind of income but also back pay for one year.I have gone through all my savings, equity on my house, you name it.Sucks, because i made such good money as a nurse, never thought my career would end at 48!
Well i will be praying for all of you, keep me posted !
Blessings,
Nurse Nancy

everyone having pain thats no good. i had surgery nov. 28th. It lasted over 3 hours. when i woke up it wasnt fun . but got up and started walking i was in hosp. a week. then went to a nursing for people to get back up and going again I was there 3 weeks. my pain has gone and i hope it never comes back. I had L1thru L5 fusion 8 screws and 2 long rods they took out my cushions and replaced with bone. they have brought me a bone fusion simulator i run it everyday for a half a hour. 282 more days they say. my feet and legs and back feel great. so Im hoping and praying that others mite have a good surgery also. I had a very good surgeon he knows what he is doing. when i showed him my mris he told me at the moment what he would have to do. thats all he does is just the spine. and he doesnt want to operate unless you have tryed the spinal or therpy.

Okay so if SSI called me yesterday, say I'm approved! No way it's so easy only applied in Nov. The lady said she was calling cuz I need Payee, we get to talking cuz none of my problems are mental, very nice lady btw. Anyways she starts looking to see why they are requiring payee say's "yep it's all Physical" then says "Wow your a mess!" kinda under her breath. Not sure i was supposed to
hear. Says she'll fix payee issue, and I can expect more news and money in a few weeks. So weird I never even saw they're doctor, thought that was required. scared that this is all gonna fall apart somehow, too good to be true ya know.
