Spianl Fusion hardware removal..

Started by 196600451@facebook on 09/20/2011 3:53pm

Hello,

At age 15 all my problems started, I had a lamanectomy (sp) and another at age 17. At age 21 after dealing with a bunch of doctors that wouldn't do anything and going to a doctor an hour away from home I had L4-S1 fused. I was fine for about a year and half and then it all started again. I have nerve damage in my left leg and sciatica going down both legs. I have done physical therapy, ESI and now on pain meds. I'm a nurse and had to quit my job because of this pain, I can barely walk, sit or even lay down. I was wondering if anyone had the same problems and got there hardware out cause of it and if it has helped. I'm trying to research before I go to the doctor cause I'm sick of it all.

Thank You,
Lauren

That is weird to find someone with the same exact problem hehe.. I had a relief after the fusion for like a year, but as soon as I got back into working I was right back where I was..(haven't had the hardware removed.) I'm actually going to my pain management doc tomorrow morning and going to talk about it. I'm having a hard time with the insurance to go back to my doctor who did the fusion cause he was out of network. No I haven't seen this doctor I have hmo insurance so it's kind of a pain. I have tried everything to and it stinks. My grandpa goes to the same pain management dr as me, and he mentioned this internal tens unit, so it sends brain waves to your brain (my mom has the booklet so I'm not sure the name but I'll post when I get it). Funny thing I really didn't research this website just was looking for a discussion board I can get into..

Hey, I won't do the spinal stimulator. I have only heard people having to take it out. So because I don't want to have it done. the doctor won't see me now only the PA. Its B.S. Thats the last resort, so I don't want to give up yet. I'm still going to fight it. I thlink I am going to have the hardware taken out I believe. Trying to find out a good nerosurgen I may get an appointment for this DR. it can't hurt. If you get the implant done I hope it works for you. I am sick of it all. also. Just can't take the pain much longer. Like I said 6 years is alot of pain, the pain just gets worse daily, so I know what your feeling. You will have to let us all know how you make out from any surgery u may have.

Well thank you. You can talk about anything. Just because I'm crazy about it . I'm crazy about everything now. Moody, mad and very unhappy. My husband really is a great guy. Its just me being me lately. I have been told it's my meds. Ya know I am tired of hearing that. I just want help. I am calling this place today to try to get in to see this Doctor. Hope it's soon, We'll see. have a great day talk soon.

I had a laminectomy L3,4,5 May 2009.I never really felt relief,so got a second opinion, and found that the L3,4 fusion was not healing. In April of 2010 I had the hardware removed (L3,had successfully fused)Tried all sorts of alternative methods of healing and pain control to no avail. In October of 2011, I had an anterior lumbar intarabody fusion L4,5.Now in August I started feeling severe pain again, after a CT scan,my MD discovered that I was not healing in the lower segment of the fusion.Uuughh!
The point I want to make is: if your hardware has healed the area involved, why not get it removed. It isn't doing much good if the healing has occured.Although the fact of having another surgery is terrififing, maybe the pins, screws, rods and any other hardware, may be causing un-necessary pain? Just a thought!

Hi debblue,
I want to thank you. Your hitting the nail on the head. Just like Lauren. I got ahold of a doctor in Rochester, I'm in Camillus,NY near Syracuse. I have been told by alot of friends to go outside of Syracuse, due to all doctors are true to each other. Thats one reason why I want another Doctor. Besides my doctor says there is nothing he can do. 2 surgeries later. I have said this before the doctors give us pain and make us drug attacts and let us go. where is this right? why? I just don't understand, I loved my doctor. trusted him with my life and he says bye bye now! Whats is this all about?

HI Lauren:

Do you have one sided buttock pain? Lots of people develop sacro-iliac joint problems after L4, L5 and S1 fusion. Do you have any groin pain? Is the pain exactly the same as it was before or different? Is the pain down both legs or just one side?

Hi Lauren
Don't get the spine stimulator, Everyone who I have heard of that had one had it removed. They all had the same problem, it made them "Itch like Crazy". If you get anything get the pain pump or infusion pump might be the right name. I have one and I actually only have to take a Hydrocodone for pain (breakthrough pain) 3 times a day. I can at least get out of the house and do a little bit which is a huge improvement for me. I have 4 fusions in my neck from 2 different surgeries(2 the first surgery) and l4-l5-S1 fused in my lower back. The last surgery I had was a year and a half ago and it was the lower back. I am having problems swallowing beacuse of the hardware and my neck and lower back are hurting again but not like I know they would be without the pain pump. I have 4 different medicines in it, Morphine, Baclofen, clonodine, and something else I can't ever remember the name of. Anyway it depends on the patient what they put in. It will at least help you better than the stimulator and it is really about the same surgery just a different device and catheter. You can research and come to your on conclusion but do yourself a favor. don't get the stimulator. I have more about the procedure and the pump under a posting called pain pump. Feel free to ask any questions here though if you have any. I will subscribe to the post so I will see it if you do.

Hi Chris, You have to remember with spine/Back problems were in trouble most likly for life. I live In East Syracuse going to the same Three sets of doctors as you. I hate my surgeon now,he was the one my GP sent me to. He put me on less pain meds after my surgery than I was on pre Surgery (the first 3days) then He gave me the same pain meds I was on pre surgery. Then my pain was level 13 to 15 pain Crazy. I wounldn`t send my dog to him, but I`m walking and fused (so was he that bad). There are some great surgeons in the 13057 zip code. There`s a guy with a last name that starts with a “ T " he`s the one I would go to next . Laser Fusions sound great if they are the same thing. If they fuse good. Does anyone know about them? Sam

You should check them out its called Brain & Spine It does sound nice. I hope there all good there. I was always told to get out of Syracuse area for problems that don't go away. I can't even hardly walk any more. I'm not 100 yrs. old, My life really sucks. My husband and I end up fighting alot cause I hurt and don't want to be told not to do things that I used to do all the time. Like work. I really miss working. No I'm not normal. good luck to you I wish the best for ya. chris

The question remains: Some fo you have indicated that they would not use a "spine stimulor"? What I am talking about is an external "bone growth stimulator" Anyone have experience with this devise?
