Help with Bulging Discs

Started by Dawn0508 on 11/15/2010 1:02pm

I injured my back due to a fall about a year and a half ago. I just found out that I have 2 bulging discs in my L4 and L5. I have been to physical therapy 2 different times for a total of about 3-4 months, which didn't help. I have had 4 steroid injections in my back which is not helping. What options are there for this? I'm so sick of being in pain and it is really affecting every area in my life. I try to exercise when I can which is low impact and stretch like the physical therapist showed me. It's just that nothing so far has worked. Can bulging discs go away?
I thank you for any help!

I had bulging disk 10 days after a Total Knee done in 2004 the pain is some better but still feels like it is jambed together the pain in my butt finely let up but I'm sur it will be back. Last MRI did not say much about the bulging disk but did say I had dergentive disk disease in evey disk so not a canidate for any kind of surgery.

That sounds alot like my situation. I was just 33 when one night I was playing b-ball and took a hard fall 2 years ago, and found out shortly thereafter that I had bulging discs at L4 & L5. The pain is horrible when sitting for any length of time, and unfortunately I sit all day for my job. My life has been absolutely MISERABLE since then. I can certainly empathize w/you. Every singe aspect of my life has been altered. I went from happy, athletic, and active, to miserable and virtually worthless, overnight. My days are now spent just trying to make it through them. I also have occassional sciatic pain down my right butt and leg, usually to the back of the knee. About 9 months ago I developed stiffness and pain (burning) in my neck and shoulders as well (snapping scapula, crackling & cracking in neck & shoulders). I've seen a few Ortho docs (pain specialists) so far who have been of little to no help, injections and so on, you know the routine. The TENS unit that was given to me by one of these docs does help but it irritates my skin so I can't use it all the time. I've been getting chiropractic care also for about a year and a half as well. While I don't believe manipulations are helping me, this has been at least very informative in learning how to properly use my body (balance, posture, etc.). I also receive PT from the same Chiropractors office and this has probably been the most beneficial b/c I've learned valuable ways to stretch throughout each day and it has given me some guidance about areas of the body to strengthen/work out, which helps considerably. I don't know what I would do w/o my stretching routine! I recently started getting massages and, while they do feel wonderful, they don't relieve the low back pain. I've also had a plasma disc decompression surgery (discectomy), which was a complete waste of time, energy, and $$$. I will not be doing more "experimental" procedures anytime soon. I currently just started accupuncture. I've had 3 accupuncture TXs so far, with no relief. I haven't used any pain meds yet, aside from Naproxen, and don't plan to either. I also use an inversion table a few times/day, which hasn't seemed to help much. It seems to relieve my pain for a few minutes but the pain just comes right back after being upright, sitting. My next step is to get evaluated by a neurosurgeon, if anything, just to get another opinion or some additionaly insight. Like you I'm sure, I would do absolutely anything in the world to rid myself of this pain that has basically ruined my life and denigrated my hope for a future. I now feel tremendously for all of those who suffer from chronic pain, and I'm hoping that by communicating with people in similar situations, I can maybe glean enough useful info to help myself and maybe others as well. I am not giving up hope and I still am optimistic, given my age, that something can be done, somehow, someway, to make this go away.
