need opionions on ANOTHER surgery

Started by richard21040 on 10/21/2010 6:00pm

I was wondering if anyone had some input for me. I had a bi-level ALIF L4-L5-S1 back in January. Although i must say that i have gotten relef in my leg, my back is still way out of wack. at times it feels worse than befor i was operated on in January
I went back to my neuro-surg this last week, and they are recomending me for more surgery. The Dr wants to do a "posterior fixation" of l4-s1....
I was wndering if anyone had any insight on this or what?....I'm very torn and don't exactly know what to do...I'm in alot of pain and the meds I have just take the edge off!!!!
Any input would be greatly apreciated!!

I had a L5-S1 fusion back in Jan of 2008 and it helped for almost a year. I have been fighting lower back pain on and off since then. I was told before by my neurosurgeon that they usually do back surgery to help the leg pain that it doesn't do much for actual back pain. I'm not sure what a posterior fixation is, but I would get another opinion before I opted for another surgery. Good Luck!

Hello, I had a posterior fixation of L4, L5, S1 ,S2 done on May 19 of this year. What it is, its a devices to stabilize lumbar spine. On Sept 2 of this year I had to have it removed my body could not take the metal. My neighbor had it done, she is doing excellent. She exercise, and she work. So if you want to know what it look like go to google and put in posterior fixation, click first bold title you will see what it look like. I was in the hospital for 4 weeks, do to in patient therapy. Weight your opitions and she what other options you have if none, to get rid of the pain you may have to try it. If it don't work your dr will remove it like my neuro did. Wish you luck, and will be praying for you.

Well I have made the decision, after talking to many ppl and a few Dr's, to have this surgery done. The first surgery did fix my leg issues jen but my back is hurting due to facet issues....I amnot going thru with this just cause he said to, I had some facet blocks that worked wonders for a day or so, instant relif! from a 7-8 pain level to a 3....this, acording to the neurosergon, is proof that the pain is comming from them. the Posterior fixation will make sure that they are stabalized and cant move therfor cant cause me pain. In essence I will have a 360 deg fusion fronm l4-s1
If by chance this operation does not work, I guess Im just screwedd for life cause i will say that this will definatly be my last cut, excluding any type of life threating issues.
so thanx to u both for your input and i'll keep posting to keep everyone that cares up to speed

Well it's been a hot min since I have been back on here. Since I decided to have the second surgery in October its been a battle of insurance to have the surgery schedualed. Needless to say I was finally given the thumbs up for this last surgery, and had the Surgery Feb 14...yes on Valentines day.
So far so GREAT!!! It's been only a cpl weeks and I feel so much better. I can honestly say that tis is the best I have felt in a real long time, yrs.
What they did was use process clamps and stem cells. The first few days obviously was horrid, as I'm sure all surgerys are. But in comarisson this operation was a pice of cake comared to my ALIF and at this point I seem to be moving a lil faster and definatly have a much greater range of motion already.
I dont wanna toot my horn to early. I am still on heavy meds, and feels like i have a tv remote in my back wen i move sometimes but I have HIGH HOPES!!

Hi,so sorry about needing another surgery.I had spinal fusion in April 10, and am getting ready for another soon.I believe that we have to do whatever we can to try to get some kind of normal life again. Pain meds are great but they certainly dont let us lead a normal life,,,they do help us to make it thru another day which is sad.My surgery went fine until I had a horrible car accident 2 mos after surgery,,,I just figure we have to keep going until we can enjoy life again.Good luck with your back and please keep in touch. I'll b praying for you,,,Dee
