Failed back surgery are the percentages right.

Started by Sam227 on 05/01/2010 8:41pm

I am having a fusion and leminectomy in July. My pain management doctor said I have a 33% chance of being pain-free after surgery. Does anyone think that percentage is off a lot because people don't want to go back to work? You think people are just looking for the free services for life? Back surgery is a major surgery for all of us. It would be a lot nicer if the percentage was a lot higher that get better. Please let me know your thoughts. I am unable to do almost anything now. My choice is surgery even at 33% .

Thanks Anne , I appreciate the advice. I was informed this a.m. by pt , and they told me that there just isn't anything that they can do for me . They said that they faxed that to the surgeon Friday, and got no response(a week ago Friday) . The surgeon said he hasn't got a report from them, and I am sorry , I aint buying that . His office hasn't returned any of their messages either , they said . It sounds to me now, that maybe this surgeon needs to put his ego on the back burner, and stop thinking that because he makes $8 million a year , he is perfect , and man up ,and either send me to some type of specialist, or just admit that he didn't fix the problem!! To me , time is critical, I, like the rest of you , am a human being, not a statistic. If you don't have the answer, just say it!! I am a very positive person by nature, but I am starting to get fed up with the run around by him, w/c , and the pussy footing atty !! I have always been honest with people, and I expect to receive the same. Unfortunately, that isn't the case here. Life is simply to short for this kind of egotistical game. I am sure he got his money, so it must be time to say, if you are still in pain now, seven months later then, it must be in your head!! Not what I call competence, or a professional that wants to help fix you, and get an adda-boy, for his career. Don't these people care what the general public think about their services ?

js64... I so understand everything you said in your latest post... I too am fighting wc and I am so tired of all of it. I was injured almost 6 years ago and just had surgery last year. As much as I didn't want to(my employer was great until I was injured), I finally had to get an attorney. I live in GA and the wc laws here are terrible. Yet when I did get an attorney, things did finally begin to fall into place. ONLY through the attorney, have I been able to get a lot of things done, including second opinions. I hope that you are able to get taken care of. I am still in a lot of pain almost 2 years out. I haven't yet been told that it is all in my head, but I can just see it coming. Good luck

Sorry, computer issues. I am in Illinois, I am told that is a good place to get hurt at, my answer to that is, no place is good to get hurt at!! It isn't about money to me, its about being able to live a normal life, and having fun with my 2 teenagers. I am doing everything in my power, to do as I am told, and I know , pain comes with it, and I accepted that, a long time ago. Although when a bunch of pain issues, and motor skill issues, and spasms, and facial twitching arise after the surgery, then I need some questions answered ! If you don't know, don't use a cop-out blame, just help a person find the resolution, or find the pain source !! Is that asking too much, ... NO !!! I called the surgeon yesterday, the rude nurse called back 5 hours later, and she was at a party. I could barely here her, but she made the mistake of being intoxicated, combined with rudeness. Wrong man, and wrong day, for her !! Number one, don't mix alcohol, with business, especially if you are on call. I believe, she will consider that , now. It almost sounds like peoples health is a game to some people. I hope I see her face to face tomorrow, so I can ask her why she treats me like that, and I will do it with her boss(surgeon) present . I don't have time for this petty stuff, I am looking for answers, and hopefully a resolution , not a personality conflict !! What is the medical profession coming to ?? It is a shame that a person has to hurt, all the time, and take things in their own hands, when they pay other people , to do this for them . By the way, to all of you on w/c, these people are relentless legalized monsters!! I haven't been hurt for 6 years Dana, only for 2 years, and it has drawn alot out of me, but I am a fighter, to the end !! If nothing can be done , just tell me , so I can make adjustments in my life, and accept it as such!! I will continue with the exercises, and walking , as instructed, and see what the surgeon has to say tomorrow . KEEP IN TOUCH , JEFF.

Rosey how are you? I hope you're doing okay. Please let us know I'm getting worried about you.
Riverhawk how are you ?Hi Anne D. I'm glad to see you're so upbeat lately. How are you doing? I hope you're doing well. I have had a tough ten days. I was at PT I pulled/hurt something in my back. Where they cut into me it has been Hot, itchy, swalloin and sore. I was hoping it would go away now I have an appointment tomorrow a.m. with the surgeon. When I called there they were very concerned about it said I should of been there a week ago. Wanted me to go to the ER ASAP. I was not going to sit in the ER all day. I was basically told by the physical therapist I didn't need to go there anymore I knew all the exercises. I know my insurance only pays for 30 times so I ran out of insurance money for him. In this world everyone's in life they are only out for the money. It's sad to say I thought the guy really cared about me. In the medical field I don't why take the job if they don't care about people. I did not say anything about being hurt at physical therapy. Like I said they're just out for the money and it's very sad. We put our trust/life into their hands and all I want is a paycheck. Which is fine thats what I go to work for but come on. I`m going on my 30 day trip I hope I get better soon.Sam

Sam, My name is Jeff. I seen in one of your posts, something about a nerve conduction test, if I may , could you tell me what that is , and what it involves? I believe I heard my GP mention something about that , recently. I would like to hear first hand from one of you , before I see any more DR.s . THANKS .

I know exactly what you mean Sam , the Pain Management Dr sent me to PT before the surgery and afteward the Surgeon sent me. I thought they were good but after the PT sessions I would have extreme pain. The pain pills helped a little. One of the therapists suggested Aqua Therapy and I did it and thought I was doing quite well when at one point my knee swelled so bad I could hardly walk, I figured I should stay off it for a week then go back to therapy. I made a bunch of appointments with the therapist at the pool. A soon as I got there for my first session the nice therapist turned into the Creature from the Black Lagoon and told me I had met my goals and they could not treat me anymore. She said medicare would not pay since I met my goals. She suggested I find a place with a pool and pay out of pocket. Now I realize the "Creature"did no want to be blamed for my knee problem. All about money. I would raise hell but it is the hospital and you never know when you need the but I tell everyone that asks not to go there because of the Creature from the Black Lagoon and all they are interested in money. I do what I can at home and realy said the heck with it I strap my brace on and what has to be done I do it and deal with the pain with drugs and Ice packs. Also I have an appntmnt in NY in a few weeks for vascular and see if that is adding to the problem.

A big hello to all of my SU buddies, Sam, have you had an xray taken of the surgical site since those symptoms began? If the hardware is still in place, you probably strained sot tissue which repairs itself, use ice on it. Typically,we patients are expecting to get blood out of a turnip. As a rule surgeons have the interpersonal skills of a shoe. Most of them have Asperger Syndrome where they can only relate to body parts not people. As I related in a previous post, surgeons are infamous for providing lousy post op care in their offices. They usually hire gorilla medically untrained office workers posing as nurses to bully patients until the patient's get tired and go elsewhere. Surgeons are only happy in the OR. Best.

Glad to hear u survived your trip Sam, I admire you for going in such a condition. I ran out of pain pills a week early. The doc from the city was supposed to send me some to get through a week and the nurse told me she put the script in the mail on Wednesday and nothing came by Saturday. I started to panic and called my family doc and told him I ran out.He said you sound like your addicted. I said maybe so but I am also in pain. Surprisingly he was in his office and told me to come in and he would give me a prescription to get me through. When I got there I said I guess I am addicted and he said that was a strong word and I did need pain relief. That we would talk about it after I see the city guy. Now my back pain right at the center of the lumbar area and down my left leg is bad. Any way maybe that saltwater and sunshine will do you some good. I hope so.

Anne D, your description of surgeons is hilarious and so right on the money! I had a good friend who was a resident in orthopedics and he told me you could always tell the neuros and neurosurgeons by the their hair as it is always a mess. I know mine has tunnelvision and he says yes to my questions when he means no because he is not paying any attention. My surgery was different than what I was thought I was having as a result. After the fact when confronted, he claims NO surgeon would have performed that procedure on me, that I he told me he was doing when he had left earth's orbit, because of the slippage. But when I intially asked about the surgery, I read it word for word out of the newsletter that his partner had invented and he was too busy bragging that he performed the surgery on his partner to make clear to me that NO I could not have it.

Hi Sam, Glad you made it to Aruba. I don't know where you flew from but it must have been a long flight! Kudos to you for your bravery! You just missed hurricane tomas down there. I hear the beaches are pretty messed up! But I'm sure you will have a glorious time! And keep up that walking!! I'm sucking up my pain with daily exercise of yoga and pilates plus walking. The pain is real bad if I have to stand more than still more than 5 mins. I seem to be in same position I was b4 surgery!

It is funny your right side is doing the same as mine. I'm a few months ahead of you if I recall correctly and my right side is almost completely reabsorbed. The radiologist told me there is now some stenosis which was supposed to be removed with the lamy and fusion. But doc said he overpaks it so he expects reabsorption and he doesn't agree with the radiologist or my back pain.
I found a marvelous PT place and when the owner was doing my eval (man, he was good, he pulled and prodded almost hungme upside down and shook me!!) I was was whining about the neurosurgeon and he said the doctor probably doesn't know what to do. He only knows how to slice and dice. Thereafter, it is the PTs and paindoctors who take over. (anyone need a good pt place feel free to email me).

I'll just be glad when I can have the hardware and screws removed as at it causing a great deal of pressure as tho I have a permanent army boot kicking me in the back. My surgeon said b/c I have little fat there it is only about 1/3 of an inch below the skin so that is what I am feeling. We kind of knew going in that it would all have to come out once healed but now all my bones are very soft due to other medical issues and the accompanying drugs. I think It will be a balancing act.

I'm sorry you had to go thru all that to get your meds Riverhawk. I feeeeeeeeeel your pain. I've had same experience but now I just DEMAND it and if they mention addiction, I just tell them to get over it b/c I need the pain pills. It is MY body not theirs. It gets a bit dicey with percs but I don't take those anymore. vicondin es is good enough. I have weaned myself down to 1 or 2 a day. If I did nothing all day I could go without. But I prefer to remain active and keep body moving. Miss one day of exercise and I really feel stiff the next day.

Wishing you all a painfree day!

hey guys
new and old
finally feel good enough to respond
I had my cervical surgery oct 19
Just before the sugery , the surgeon said he would do a anterior decompression with fusion on c3-4, then c6-t1 he said the dics werent hernaited severly at other levels so he would allow for mobility
sam u said that the donated bone site at the hip would hurt, Man! U werent kidding .
That site is now infected
Again i have new pain ,but im over 3 weeks post op and im off pain pills
I went to the h of special surgery . Very happy with the surgery at this time even though its too early to tell
The 2nd day in hospital i was in and out , and woke up to the surgeon waiting for me to wake up sitting by my side. the 3 and 4th day he came to see me also. along with other members of his staff
the fellowship doctor came every morning to check on my wound. The pain pump help alot.
Everyone at the hospital said the surgery went extrmely well and how great my doctor is, i kept thinking that ill see that for my self. Before i left hospital they did another x-ray and the doctors said
everything was ok. Have to go back nov 17 for another x-ray. we'll see.
Didnt get enough time to quit smoking one week before surgery i quit. I will try not to start again
Getting tired , Sam dont give up!, use your vacation to walk and swim alot in the pool!
Doesnt your injury take 3 to 4 months of recoperation?
feel better guys

Rosey Glad to here your alive!! It sounds like you are doing good. Just do what the doctor says always even if they are sometime uncaring butt heads. That`s really what I`ve been doing.
Riverhawk Just tell the doc`s you need oxycodone 15`s5a day. They can give you enough so you aren`t out before its time for a refill. It`s bad cause if you are in pain you don`t/CAN`T DO ANYTHNG and you just feel worse!!! It`s time for somemore or new drugs for me.I`m just in pain real bad all the time... It`s almost time for me to face the facts I`m still worse than presurgery. I`m not a nut yet but if I can`t or never going to get better I wish I would DIE. I was really hoping that having things to do in Aruba I would start feeling a little better but I`m not. I`m only walking nothing hard my pain levels are getting worse.I`m sleeping as much here as at home. I wish at this point I never had the surgery.I still have a hard time puting socks on. I have to start seeing how hard it is to get SSD. I don`t think I could get anything else. I can`t work and it`s time for me to face that when I get home.If I can`t put socks on by than it will be time.My wife is with me till next week than she will get a break from my Bitching all the time about pain and really every thing now. It`s starting really be a problem now she nicelly tells me I yell at her all the time!! I love my wife. Do you guys think its right that my family has to put up with Me ? Be honest with me. When I leave fathers house he has tears in his eyes allways. Then I stay away from his house than he yells where have I been . I tell him that I don`t want him upset so I stay away. I can`t stay away from my wife and kids or should I??? I can buy a condo in South Beach and really stay away. I was thinking if the heat made me better I would do that but as of now I`m really not doing any better in aruba. I NEED HELP GUYS, thanks Sam

I understand Sam, my wife that is all she hears. She has about had it. I got 50 vicodens 10 325 and have 28 today tuesday night I understand what you mean about getting a different med that i am not taking so many. The doc in the city gave me oxy 10 650 last time and I did not have to take as many. I just need to sit down with these guys and tell them what I am taking now is not working all I think about are pills. I am not really doing my PT or walking like I should in th morning I need to use a cane. I was better the after the first three weeks than I am now. I too talk about buying a doublewide someplace a little warmer but I need to be around here, having a lot of work done here. I got SDD very quickly but I am older than you and that helps but from they way u sound u should go for it. You can always give it up and go back if you get,or I should say when, you get better. It is one heck of a way to live with all this pain. I broke my femur and several other bones in my lifetime nothing was this bad this long. Now when I sit for awhile or sleep when I get up it is extremely painful. I try not to b*&ch to much in front of my wife she should not have to go through this because of me , I don't ever want to go anywhre or do anything. I am a big Atlantic City guy and I don't even have the desire to go there. Oh well hit the casino while you are there get your mind off it.

Heck if I was anyone I would of turned this of along time ago. But we are trying to help people letting them know THERE ARE FAILERS LIKE ME. I will take the email off in a few days.I hope my pain doc don`t follow this. As if they care enough to.
You need oxycodine or oxycotin riverhawk. Ask for them but you don`t get the fast relief but its better for you. Its the same nac without the tylnal . When I first start them I thought they weren`t working but they are a lot better for you and stronger. We need are pain meds so bad we will just get shakey when I have to go get them to. That`s why I could only stay 30 days cause I need my meds and I have to MAKE SURE I GET THEM.I forget everything but never forget my pain my pain meds.( That is what it is) without them we would be in wheelchairs. Still in massive pain. I said to my wife that I would have to hit the bottle daily if I didn`t have my meds she said I`m drunk/hi most of the time now. I`m going for my slow hour walk. Anyone can email me if you want to no the real deal about my surgery. You all really know I have been honest on eveything. There have been a few times on this site the scamers mock me but who cares this is my life now. Hopfully soon I can say how great I`m doing. thanks again Sam

Started my 7am walk today and I took my 1oxycodone 15s no oxycottin60s today at all. My pain level is the same. I`ve told my pain mangement Dr they don`t help me anymore I guess I`m right. I know the heat here is a big help 85-90 here all the time. I still took all 6 of my oxycodone 15s but I`m about level 6 pain out of 10 Ok for now. Maybe the thing to do is wear yourself out by doing exercise!

Hope you're having a good time on vacation. As always, I am following your posts.

Have an appointment next month to see about a fusion.

Take care.

Pam please be careful this surgery is truely HECK HECK HECK wish I could say somthing better. If I had to do it again I wouldn`t ever. Sorry I can`t say anything else. I had a good dr. to.I had two good days I had to take my oxycottin 60s at 4pm today I`m mad about it. I think I just over did it today plus it`s wet/damp today and I walked in the rain. I can`t believe the recovery time I`m 4 months now. Maybe next time I feel better it will be for life. Rosey I hope your doing better than me. Neck they say is easyer than lower back. I will be here/in Aruba till dec 4 ,I hope I`m better by than if not well we won`t say I failed but it`s almost time by than. I don`t have to be 100% but atleast the same as presurgery. I have a hard time putting socks on. Thank God I have velcro straps on my shoes.
Pam I`m glad your still out there so many Old timers on this site get chased away by the BUTT`s from the lazer surgery center`s plants/conartis. They sould not be on this side of spine universe . But I guess they have to con people anyway they can or they would be out of business. I`m not happy with my surgery but atleast I had/have a chance. Maybe you will do great but just bewhere it`s tougher than you could imagine. I was a strong man before all of this.

Sam:

The problem is I continue to get worse by the week. They say it's degenerative disc disease due to radiation I had in the 80's. I know if I don't get the surgery, if this continues to progress by next year at this time I won't be able to walk. It sucks!! So I'm thinking if I have a shot at at least staying the same, then I need to go for it.

About your condition, I read that it could take up to a year to heal. So don't be too hard on yourself or too pessimistic. Things may turn around.

Stay strong!

I know the fusion will help you. don`t worry to much. It`s just more pain than what we already had or have. Now I am all confused. Just to start I am at a point where when I get up in the morning I have to hobble around with a cane just getting washed , dressed etc. THEN I have to take two pain pills and lay down for an hour before I can I am confused because I also have PAD and I needed to have an angioplasty in my right Illiac artery. I had my surgery in April, my story is in here similar to all. I was improving a little , I had the angioplasty Sept 1st and right after had hip pain and down my leg I thought it was from the guy pressing on my puncture wound and hurt my because it was so sensitive after the sugery. They told me to com back in about three weeks, That was today. So now the Vascular surgeon asked me what the Neuro Surgeon says , I told him I haven't seen him that he said we were done. I don't understand I guess my question is when does one finish with the neuro surgeon. The last time I was there he just said that he doesn;t have to see me again, I mean he did not take any follow up mri's or anything, shoulf he have done that?

Good morning , Guys
Riverhawk your surgen must figure HE FIX YOU in his eyes. Now you must be healed from that surgery. He is a jerk like most of them. On you I bet you will have to go back for a fusion. On the surgery where they go in and just cut off some of the disc`s it just come back. My friend had it done it didn`t last long at all. I had 3 they sliced 1 they fused. I will find the operation report (mine)that I have on this site so you all can see what they did to me. I can`t spell the dr.`s words sorry. I`m fuse 1/2 done so that`s working but the pain is still here more than presurgery which sucks.I have to go for my hour walk or so.It`s easy to walk here but still not fun but better than home `8am here. Time to get started. Riverhawk I hope ANNE D. is still with us she will have a real answer for you. This all I know doctor`s are jerk`s that try to fix us like a car. The only think is are bodies beyond repair. It`s time to trade are bodies in for a new . I wish it could be done. It kindof is with our kid`s to replace us. This is a Joke not funny cause we are living this. I`m sorry to all of us living in this nasty spine pain . I wonder now if I did bad things in my life that I have to live like this now. I always tryed to help so many people through out my life time. I have help 100s of people I run a surport group weekly for free . At my time of need in hospital and rehab center only 11 peope came to see me they are the only ture friends I have real sad . I guess we live and learn. Sam Sorry I`m sappy to day My life isn`t to good right now I no I need mental help most days

A big hello to all my SU buddies, Riverhawk, it's hard to believe but it really is the truth: surgeons operate, period. They get their fees paid by insurance companies to operate. Followup visits by post op patients provide them with a little chump change. Once they've done the surgery, there's nothing more that they can do except operate on you again(it's called a revision. They have 1 tool it's a hammer, so you become a nail.) If you complain a lot about pain, they'll usually suggest having another surgery. During and shortly after surgery xrays are done to check proper placement of hardware . About 3 months out xrays are repeated to look at hardware and for signs of bone fusion. At 6 months xrays are repeated and then @ 1 year . Surgeons have no way of dealing with nerve pain from existing damage. Many times the damaged nerves regenerate but that takes a lot of time, like a year, if at all. The longer time you've had the nerve pain, the less likely the nerves will regenerate. Going back to the surgeon for pain relief is like going to the hardware store looking for a bottle of milk. Try a pain management specialist or a neurologist .
Spinal surgery is NOT a cureall for back pain as many people would like to believe. It's merely a mechanical procedure to correct certain defects and then it's up to the patient to take full responsibility for their own recovery and it takes much longer than any of us ever suspected.
So let's just keep trucking along and supporting each other but we must do the strengthening exercises everyday for the rest of our lives because strong core muscles help compensate for a damaged back.. My Best.

You are out how long now? I`m almost for months now, I hope I start feeling better soon. Again Thank You for all your help. Sam
