About Benjamin D. Sommers, MD, PhD

Dr. Benjamin D. Sommers is an Associate Professor of Health Policy and Economics in the Department of Health Policy and Management at Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health in Boston, MA. He is also an Associate Professor of Medicine in the Division of General Medicine and Primary Care at Brigham and Women’s Hospital/Harvard Medical School.

After earning his doctorate degree in Health Policy from Harvard University, Dr. Sommers completed his medical degree at Harvard Medical School. After medical school, he went on to complete an internal medicine and primary care residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, MA.

Dr. Sommers’ research interests include access to health care among low-income families, Medicaid, health insurance markets and health reform, health care costs, and health disparities. He has produced more than 120 research publications, including articles, commentaries, reviews, and government reports.

Dr. Sommers’ expertise has earned him dozens of awards and accolades throughout his career. Most recently, he earned the 2017 AcademyHealth Health Services Research Impact Award, which recognize research that has had a significant impact on health and health care.
