About Khoi D. Than, MD

Dr. Khoi Than is Associate Professor in the Departments of Neurosurgery and Orthopaedic Surgery at Duke University in Durham, NC. His research interests include clinical outcomes of spinal and neurological surgeries, novel intradiscal injection therapy to treat degenerative disc disease and the role of bone morphogenetic proteins (BMP-2) in metastatic spine cancers. Dr. Than’s clinical practice include spine care.

After receiving his medical degree from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine in Baltimore, MD, Dr. Than fulfilled a neurosurgical residency at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. Thereafter, he completed a fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Complex Spine Surgery at the University of California at San Francisco.

Dr. Than has received several awards from prestigious universities and spine organizations, including the Selby Spine Scholarship, Scoliosis Research Society Edgar Dawson Traveling Fellowship and University of Michigan Department of Neurosurgery Max Peet Teaching Award. Furthermore, he serves on the Associate Board and Review Board for The Spine Journal, is an ad hoc reviewer of the World Neurosurgery and has served as ad hoc reviewer for several other well-known spine and neurosurgery journals.

In addition, Dr. Than is a member of important spine associations, including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS), Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), AANS/CNS Section on Disorders of the Spine and Peripheral Nerves, International Spine Study Group (ISSG), Lumbar Spine Research Society (LSRS), North American Spine Society (NASS) and Society for Minimally Invasive Spine Surgery (SMISS). He is a candidate member of the Scoliosis Research Society and Western Neurosurgical Society.
